Westminster Holds On For Win Despite Late Charge From @UPG_WBB

GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team rallied from a 17-point first quarter deficit to get within seven points in the fourth quarter, but Westminster managed to halt the rally and hold on for a 74-61 victory in a non-conference matchup Saturday afternoon in Chambers Hall.

Westminster led 25-8 after the first quarter of action as it connected on 9-of-13 from the field and was a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the three-point arc.

Both sides came out firing in the second quarter with each team shooting over 60%. Pitt-Greensburg made 7-of-11, while Westminster hit 8-of-12. Kelsey Oddis led the way for the Bobcats scoring 10 of her team-high 20 points in the second stanza, while Jackie Matthews came off the bench and drilled two three-point shots.

Pitt-Greensburg cut the deficit to 17 with just over three minutes left in the half, but Aliya Gage nailed a three and hit two free-throws to push the lead to 46-27 at halftime.

Westminster put together an incredible shooting display in the first half, shooting 68.0% from the field and hitting 6-of-its-9 three-point attempts as well as 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. Pitt-Greensburg clamped down of defense in the final 20 minutes of action and held the Titans to just 30.77% from the field and 33.33% from behind the three-point arc.

The Bobcats opened the second half on a quick 8-0 run to cut the lead to get within single-digits (46-35), before Westminster called a timeout to stop the outburst.

Both sides continued to trade baskets at either end of the court and an old-fashioned three-point basket from Nadege Durand got Pitt-Greensburg within eight points, but Jake Mathews' three-point shot with 32 seconds left pushed the Titans' lead to 14 (63-49) heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

Pitt-Greensburg held the Titans scoreless over the opening 3:30 of the final quarter and Oddis' layup made the score 63-55, before Westminster called a 30 seconds timeout.Westminster's first points of the quarter came with 5:46 left on Paige Quinn's old-fashioned three-point play.

Pitt-Greensburg continued to claw its way back and back-to-back baskets by Colleen Murphy and Oddis got the Bobcats within 7 with 2:45 left in regulation, but Westminster held off the charge making 6-of-8 from the free-throw line.

The Bobcats placed three players in double-figures led by Oddis, who tallied 20 points and seven boards, while Durand and Murphy chipped in with 12 and 11 respectively. Emily Fromknecht paced the Titans with 20 points and teammates Gage and Matthews added 14 and 12 to aid Westminster in the victory.

The Bobcats return to conference play tomorrow afternoon, as they travel to Erie, Pa to face Penn State Behrend at 3:00 pm.
