Last Second Free-Throws Lifts Medaille Past @UPGBasketball

BUFFALO, N.Y.- Meghale Ford connected on two free-throws with just a second remaining in regulation gave Medaille a 68-67 victory over the Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball team in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup Saturday afternoon in The Sullivan Center.

The last minute of action provided much excitement for both sides. Pitt-Greensburg took a 67-66 lead with 4.8 seconds remaining as Cam Siegfreid drove down the lane and kicked the ball out to Joe Mancini, who came up huge with his lone three of the game, as his shot hit nothing but net. 

After the Mavericks called a timeout to set up a play to either tie or win the game, Meghale Ford drove the length of the court and drew a foul with 0.3 seconds left and headed to the line with a chance to tie or take the lead. Ford came up clutch connecting on both free-throws to give the Mavericks the 67-66 comeback victory. 

Siegfreid led all scorers with 21 points on the afternoon, knocking down 6-of-9 from the field, which included 5-of-7 from behind the three-point arc. Jay Grubb also was in double-figures for the Bobcats totaling 15 points on 7-of-10 from the floor and also hauled down six rebounds. 

Medaille had three players total double-digits in the game, led by Kirk Hawkins, who tallied 15 points off the bench. The Mavericks got great play from its bench as they outscored Pitt-Greensburg by a 33-11 margin. 

Pitt-Greensburg had its best shoot performance of the season knocking down 25-of-62 from the field for a 48.1% clip, while also tying its season-high with 10 three-pointers. 

The two sides traded baskets to begin the half with neither team holding more than four point lead. Ford's layup tied the game at 16 for the Mavericks with 8:38 left in the opening 20 minutes. but Pitt-Greensburg would race out to a 9-0 run over the next five minutes and a layup from Cody Spaid put the Bobcats ahead 25-19. 

Medaille would tighten up its play and outscore the Bobcats 13-0 over the final 3:56 of the half and headed into the locker room leading 29-25. 

Pitt-Greensburg took the lead early in the second stanza, with a three-pointer from Siegfreid and a bucket from Grubb.

At the halfway point of the second half, both sides were deadlocked at 41, which set up for an exciting last 10 minutes of regulation. Medaille held the slight lead until Siegfreid nailed back-to-back three-pointers to put the Bobcats in the lead 53-51. 

The Mavericks would take the lead back on an exciting four-point play by Hawkins. Hawkins connected on a three-pointer and was fouled on the play, which resulted in a free-throw attempt. Hawkins hit the free-throw, which was followed by baskets from Mike Hollenbeck and Ford to extend the Medaille lead to six (59-53) with just under six left in the game.

Pitt-Greensburg chipped away at the lead and eventually jumped in front by one (62-61) on a three-ball from David Knox. Grubb followed Knox's three-pointer with a layup to put the Bobcats up three with a minute left, but the Mavericks answered with a layup from Hawkins to get within one (64-63). 

Brandon Roach came up huge with his only bucket of the game, drilling a three-pointer with 24 seconds left to put the Mavs in the lead 66-64. 

Pitt-Greensburg called a timeout and out of the break, Siegfreid drove the lane and kicked it to Mancini, who drilled a long three to put the Bobcats ahead 67-66 with just 4.8 seconds left. 

Medaille called a TO and set up a play to either tie or take the lead. Ford drove the length of the floor and drew a foul as he slashed to the basket for a layup, which resulted in two shots. With 0.3 seconds on the clock, Ford connected on both attempts to give the Mavericks the win. 

Pitt-Greensburg returns to action Wednesday, when it travels to Mt. Aloysius for an AMCC contest. Wednesday's tip is set for 6 pm.
