Box Score BRADFORD- The Pitt-Greensburg men's tennis team battled Pitt-Bradford but came up just short falling 5-4 in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup Friday night.
Pitt-Greensburg picked up a win at no. 2 doubles from the pairing of
Tyler Fox (Mt. Pleasant, Pa, Southmoreland) and
Jacob Chovanec (Mt. Pleasant, Pa, Mt. Pleasant) 8-1 to even the match at one all.
Zachary Pivirotto (Export, Pa, Franklin Regional) and
Doug Smeltzer (Latrobe, Pa, Greater Latrobe) were locked in a battle at the top spot in doubles play, but it was Pitt-Bradford that barely pulled out the 9-8 win. The Panthers recorded a win in the third spot, 8-4 and held a slight 2-1 lead heading into singles action.
Pivirotto cruised to a win at no. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0 and both Smeltzer and Chovanec won their matches rather easily. Smeltzer picked up a win at #3, 6-0, 6-3 and Chovanec won decisevly at #4 6-2, 6-0. Bradford pulled out wins at second and six singles, and the match would be decided at the no. 5 spot.
Michael Meyer (Pittsburgh, Pa, Keystone Oaks) won the opening set with an easy 6-2 triumph, but the Panthers would force an all important third set to decide the match with a 6-2 win in set two. In the third and final set, the two players battled back and forth, but ultimately it was Pitt-Bradford that pulled out the win and claimed a hard fought 5-4 win.
Pitt-Greensburg returns to the courts Saturday, when it faces Penn State Behrend at 3:30 p.m.
