Box Score GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg men's tennis team displayed a lot of grit and fight Sunday afternoon on Senior day, but came up just short in the win column falling 5-4 to Penn State Altoona in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular-season finale.
With the loss, Pitt-Greensburg falls to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in conference play and is now eliminated from playoff contention.
The doubles portion of the match was evenly contested from both sides, as two of the three matches were decided by two points or less. The pairing of
Zachary Pivirotto and
Doug Smeltzer battled Jake Colledge and Jonanthan D'Arcy in a back and forth contest, but it was the Altoona pairing that edged Pitt-Greensburg, 8-6 for the victory.
The third doubles contest was also evenly matched between
Jeremy Simms and
Terrance Madarish for Pitt-Greensburg and Carlos Cevallos and Andrew Ung for Altoona The two sides traded points back and forth, but after a long and battle tested fight, Penn State Altoona came out on top, 9-7.
Pitt-Greensburg did however take the #2 doubles match as
Tyler Fox and
Jacob Chovanec cruised to an 8-3 win.
Fox and Chovanec were also victorious in singles play at #2 and #4 respectively. Fox took down D'Arcy, 6-1-7-5, and Chovanec defeated Cevallos, 6-1, 6-1.
Pivirotto also put Pitt-Greensburg in the win column with a victory at #1 singles, 6-3, 6-2 over Colledge.
However, the Lions recorded wins at #3, #5, and #6 singles and hung on for the 5-4 victory.
Pitt-Greensburg will travel to Bethany College Thursday, for its regular-season finale at 3:30 p.m.
