GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg won both games of a doubleheader against D'Youville, Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Park.
Pitt-Greensburg took the opening game 7-0, and despite a late inning rally from D'Youville, the Bobcats completed the sweep with an 11-7 win in the second game of the day.
Prior to Sunday's games, Pitt-Greensburg's six seniors were honored along with their families for Senior Day.
The Bobcats got fantastic efforts on the mound from both of its starters,
Brandon Hoener and
Cohl Gibbs. Hoener tossed a six-hit complete-game shutout and struck out four to earn his fifth win of the season. Gibbs had arguably his best start of the season for the Bobcats, tossing 7.2 inning with four strikeouts. Gibbs gave up just three runs but ran into some trouble in the eighth inning, as the Spartans managed to score four runs, before
Brett Dadig was called upon for the four out save. Dadig allowed just one hit in just over an inning to pick up his second save of the season.
Pitt-Greensburg put together an impressive day at the plate as a team, batting .426 with 18 runs and belting out 26 hits.
Dylan Pounds recorded a game-high four hits on the afternoon, while
Tyler Lilja,
Tyler Holland,
Chris Common,
Mike Spadafore, and
Zack Zimmerman each collected three hits. Lilja led all batters on the afternoon, driving in a game-high four RBI.
Holland and Common each went deep for their eighth home runs of the season. The power hitting duo rank second in the conference, trailing only Matthew McCourt of Mt. Aloysius, who has 13.
Game 1- Pitt-Greensburg 7, D'Youville 0
Hoener sent the Spartans down 1-2-3 in the top of the first and Pitt-Greensburg would take advantage in the bottom of the inning. Zimmerman put together a great plate appearance and drew a walk after a seven-pitch at bat. Pounds followed with a single and Zimmerman came around to plate the first run of the day of a single by Holland.
Pounds was at it again in the second inning with another RBI, as he hit a sacrifice fly to center, which scored
Ian Hart to give Pitt-Greensburg a 2-0 advantage.
Hoener continued to shut down the Spartans at the plate, and with the game still in the balance, Pitt-Greensburg vaunted offense showed up in the fifth inning. Holland, Common, and
Daniel Kiester all connected on home runs as the Bobcats put the game away with a five-run inning to extend their lead to 7-0.
Hoener allowed just two hits over the final two inning and Pitt-Greensburg would take the opening game of the doubleheader 7-0.
Game 2- Pitt-Greensburg 11, D'Youville 7
The Bobcats carried the momentum into game two and would get off to a great start in their first at-bats. With two outs, the Bobcats scored all five runs. Lilja smacked a bases loaded double, which scored Common,
Mike Parlak, and Pounds. Kiester brought home two with a single to third base.
D'Youville got three runs back in the third inning, but the Bobcats added a run in both the third and the fourth on base hits by
Derek Shaw and
Tyler Lilja.
Pitt-Greensburg gave itself some cushion with three runs in the seventh, but D'Youville made things interesting scoring four runs in the eighth. The Spartans had the tying run at-bat, but Dadig ended the inning with a ground out to Pounds.
Dadig shut down the Spartans in the ninth and send the Bobcats to the 11-7 win and a sweep of the Spartans.
Pitt-Greensburg returns to action Friday, when it plays host to Hilbert for its regular-season home finale. Friday's games are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
