GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team came to a close Monday afternoon as it dropped both games in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference First Round series to Mt. Aloysius at Bobcat Park.
Mt. Aloysius advances to the AMCC Championship Round, where it will face La Roche Thursday afternoon.
Pitt-Greensburg ends the 2017 campaign with an 18-13 overall record and earned the no. 3 seed in the AMCC Tournament with a 10-6 mark in conference play.
Tyler Holland belted three more home runs in the doubleheader against the Mounties, which gives him 11 for the season. His 11 home runs are a new Pitt-Greensburg single-season record, breaking fellow sophomore
Chris Common, who set the single-season record earlier this season.
Holland and Common put together memorable seasons and now rank first and second in program history for total home runs in a single season.
Against the Mounties,
Mike Parlak led the way offensively collecting five hits, while
Vinnie Shoff totaled a season-high four hits in the second game of the doubleheader.
Dylan Pounds and
Ryan Dodson each had multi-hit afternoons in what would be the final time the two seniors would wear a Bobcat uniform.
Game 1- Mt. Aloysius 7, Pitt-Greensburg 3
Mt. Aloysius jumped out to the lead in the first inning as it scored two runs on two hits for a 2-0 lead.
The Mounties struck again in the third inning loading the bases and Anthony Rocc reached base on a throwing error by
Zack Zimmerman, which scored Matthew McCourt to put the visitors up 3-0.
In the bottom of the inning, Pitt-Greensburg loaded the bases with no outs and Dodson would come to the plate. After seeing a strike on the first pitch, Dodson sent a fly ball to the outfield which was caught, but it was deep enough to score
Mike Spadafore for the run of the day for the Bobcats.
Holland led off the 5
th inning with a solo home run as Pitt-Greensburg trailed just 3-2 heading into the final two innings.
Mt. Aloysius added some insurance to its lead scoring four runs in the sixth and would hold on for a 7-3 win in the first game of the day.
Game 2- Mt. Aloysius 16, Pitt-Greensburg 6
After a scoreless first inning by both teams, Mt. Aloysius exploded for an eight run frame to take control of the game. A total of 13 batters would come to the plate and the big inning forced the Bobcats to make a call to the bullpen and bring in
Cohl Gibbs.
It looked as if the Bobcats would cut into the lead in the second, as the bases were full, but Mt. Aloysius starter Creek Miller got out of the jam with a strikeout and a flyout for the final two outs of the inning.
The Mounties were at it again in the fourth with a six-run frame and would added two in the sixth for the 16-6 win.
