Durand's Last Second Free-Throw Lifts @UPG_WBB To 51-50 Victory At Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio- Nadege Durand's free-throw with just over two seconds remaining lifted the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team (2-11, 2-4 AMCC) to a 51-50 victory against Franciscan (0-10, 0-6 AMCC)  Wednesday evening in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup.

After two free-throws by Kaitlyn Sonneberger tied the game at 50 with 19 seconds left in regulation, Pitt-Greensburg called a 30 second timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Bobcats passed the ball around the perimeter and eventually found Durand at the free-throw line, which the freshman drove toward the hoop and was fouled on her shot attempt, sending her to the line for two.

Durand missed the first of the two attempts, but connected on the second to give the Bobcats the one point lead. Franciscan attempted to heave a full-court pass, but the Bobcats were able to intercept the inbounds pass, which sealed the win.

Kelsey Oddis and Nadege Durand both recorded double-doubles for Pitt-Greensburg in the victory. Oddis poured in a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Durand added 10 points and hauled in a game-high 18 boards. Colleen Murphy also reached double-figures tallying 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting.

Abby Baierl and Sonnenberger each totaled 14 points to pace the offense for the Barons.

The two sides were tied at 10 after the opening 10 minutes of action, while Franciscan outscored Pitt-Greensburg 16-6 in the second quarter and headed to the halftime break leading 26-16.

Pitt-Greensburg held Franciscan without a point until the 6:49 mark of the third stanza and trimmed the deficit to seven, 41-34 heading into the final quarter.

The Bobcats clawed their way back in the fourth quarter on the defensive end as they held Franciscan to without a basket for nearly five minutes. After Cierra Vaughan's layup put the Barons up 43-36, the Bobcats held the Barons scoreless until the 3:52 mark, when Vaughan cashed 1-of-2 in at the charity stripe.

Maddy Coddington answered the Vaughan free-throw with a layup to cut the deficit to two, but Baierl hit a free-throw to push the lead back to three (47-44) for Franciscan with just over two minutes left in the game.

Durand came down and scored two of her 10 points on a layup to get the Bobcats within one and the visitors would finally take the lead on an old-fashioned three-point play by Murphy, as she hit a layup and made the ensuing free-throw to put Pitt-Greensburg ahead 49-47 with 1:23 left.

On the next possession, Sonnenberger missed a jumper and Pitt-Greensburg corralled the rebound, which was followed by a timeout that allowed the ball to be advanced past half court. The Bobcats would turn the ball over on the next possession and Baierl drew a foul, which sent the leading scorer for Franciscan to the line.

Pitt-Greensburg would still remain in the lead 49-48 as Baierl made just 1-of-her-2 attempts. Franciscan intentionally fouled the Bobcats and freshman Cat Gollihugh headed to the line. Gollihugh made 1-of-2 once again from the line and the Barons would call a timeout to draw up a play with a chance to extend the game.

Sonnenberger drew a foul with 19 seconds left and would make both of her attempts to tie the game at 50, before Pitt-Greensburg called a timeout to set up the last possession of regulation.

Pitt-Greensburg would spread the floor and pass the ball around the perimeter and eventually fouled Durand at the free-throw line, which she drove to the hoop and was fouled with two seconds left. Durand missed the first attempt but made the second and the Bobcats stole the ensuing pass from the Barons to hold on for the 51-50 win.

The Bobcats return to the court Saturday, when they play host to Hilbert at 3 pm.
