Sitler and Coddington Post Career-Highs But Women’s Basketball Falls 71-67 At Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG- Despite a career-high 17 points from Maddie Sitler and a team-high 10 rebounds by Maddy Coddington, Waynesburg (2-3) used a 29-point fourth quarter to top the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team (1-3) by a score of 71-67 in a non-conference matchup, Saturday afternoon in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Sitler paced the Pitt-Greensburg offense with a team-high 17 points on 7-of-11 from the field and also grabbed eight rebounds, while Coddington put together a career-day on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds, nine of which were on the defensive glass.

Colleen Murphy, Sam Ballow, and Nadege Durand also were in double-figures for the Bobcats. Murphy totaled 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting as well as knocking down 3-of-4 from behind the three-point arc, and Ballow posted a season-high 15 points and chipped in with six rebounds. Durand also contributed with 10 points and aided on the defensive side with four steals.

Also on the offensive end, Pitt-Greensburg did a great job of getting all its players involved, totaling 14 assists on 26 made field goals. The Bobcats managed to create and extend their possessions, grabbing 14 offensive rebounds as well as forcing 17 Waynesburg turnovers.

The two sides continued to trade baskets throughout the opening quarter and following a Ballow jumper that tied the score at 13 with 1:50 left, Erin Joyce came right back for the Yellow Jackets and knocked down a three-pointer to give the home side the lead for the remainder of the quarter. Ballow hit two free-throws with 26 seconds left and Pitt-Greensburg would head into the second quarter trailing 16-15.

Waynesburg continued the momentum into the second quarter and opened on a 9-2 run over the first three minutes. The Bobcats would come right back with a 9-0 run of their own, which was capped by a three-pointer from Murphy with 3:33 left in the half, but the Yellow Jackets would outscore Pitt-Greensburg 8-4 over the final three minutes and head into the break holding a 34-31 advantage.

The Bobcats came out of the break on fire, shooting 56% for the quarter, making 10-of-their-18 field goal attempts and would lead 56-42 at the end of three quarters of play.

Waynesburg would not quit without a fight and eventually came all the way back to tie the game at 65 with 2:05 left. Following Elena McDermott's layup to knot the score at 67, Durand was fouled and headed to the line where she converted both free-throw attempts to put the Bobcats in front by two.

Both sides had a possession following the free-throws, but neither team would score as Pitt-Greensburg continued to hold a two-point advantage with one minute left in regulation. Following a turnover by the Bobcats, Waynesburg regained possession and drew a foul that sent McDermott to the line with a chance to once again tie the game.McDermott connected on both attempts to make the score even at 67 and the Bobcats called a timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, Joyce managed to steal the ball from Pitt-Greensburg. Following the steal, Waynesburg missed the ensuing layup, but Julie Deklaven grabbed her own miss and gave a great pass to Andrew Orlosky who scored on the layup to put Waynesburg up 69-67 with 25 seconds left.

Waynesburg called a 30 second timeout following the made layup and gave the ball back to the Bobcats with a chance to tie or take the lead. The Bobcats drew up a play during the stoppage, but coming out of the timeout, made an errant pass, giving the ball back to Waynesburg.

Murphy intentionally fouled Waynesburg and sent Orlosky to the free-throw line, where she came up clutch knocking down both attempts to put the home side up 71-67.

After the free-throws, Durand and Murphy both had looks at the basket, but time would run out as Waynesburg would hold on for the 71-69 victory.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to the court Wednesday evening, when it opens up Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Play with a road contest at Franciscan. Wednesday's conference-opener is slated for 6 pm.
