Women's Basketball Secures Road Win At Franciscan In AMCC Opener Wednesday Night

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio- Nadege Durand scored 17 points to lead the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team (2-3, 1-0 AMCC) to a 55-51 victory at Franciscan (0-5, 0-1 AMCC) in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener for both teams Wednesday evening inside Finnegan Fieldhouse.

Durand led the Bobcats with 17 points on 7-of-13 from the floor and helped contribute on both sides of the court, grabbing eight rebounds, five of which she hauled down on the offensive end. The sophomore forward picked up her fourth foul late in the third quarter, but did a great job of avoiding her fifth foul, while continuing to help the team to the victory. After picking up her fourth foul, Durand still managed to chip in four points and grab three rebounds, two of which were on the offensive glass.

Sam Ballow also tallied double-digits for Pitt-Greensburg scoring 11 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Ballow came up clutch from the free-throw line hitting 8-of-her-10 attempts and was huge down the stretch, knocking down 5-of-6 from the line over the final five minutes of regulation.

Pitt-Greensburg outrebounded Franciscan 36-34 for the game and grabbed 14 offensive rebounds, which they converted into 10 second chance points.

After committing 10 turnovers in the first half of action, the Bobcats did a much better job of securing the basketball, totaling just five turnovers over the final two quarters.

Pitt-Greensburg got off to an extremely quick start as they opened the game on a 14-2 run over the first five minutes of the contest and held a 14-8 advantage heading into the second quarter. After a layup gave the Barons a 2-0 lead just 16 seconds into the game, Pitt-Greensburg held the Barons without a point until the 2:31 mark when Tessa Crider ended scoreless drought with a three-pointer.

The Bobcats continued to remain ahead on the scoreboard through the entire second stanza and led 23-22 at the halftime break.

However, the Barons continued to chip away at the deficit and would eventually take a one point lead midway through the third quarter on a layup by Grace Godich. Franciscan put together its best quarter of the game after the halftime break, as they outscored Pitt-Greensburg 21-13 and would lead 43-38 heading into the final 10 minute period.

The lead would not last long as the Bobcats opened the final quarter with six-straight points to once again go ahead on the scoreboard. Crider came right back for Franciscan and answered with a jumper to put the home side back in front, but that would be the final time the Barons would remain in the lead.

Ballow answer the Crider jumper with two makes at the free-throw line to put the Bobcats in the lead for good. Pitt-Greensburg put together a dominant fourth quarter to seal the victory, outscoring the Barons by a 17-8 margin and holding Franciscan to just 25% (4-16) from the floor.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to the court Saturday, when it plays host to Hilbert for its AMCC home-opener. Saturday's conference opener is slated for a 1pm tip-off.
