Women's Basketball Holds Off Pitt-Bradford For 66-63 Victory Saturday Afternoon

BRADFORD- Freshman Maddie Sitler scored a game-high 26 points to propel the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team (4-4, 3-1 AMCC) to a 66-63 victory at Pitt-Bradford (3-5, 3-1 AMCC) in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup Saturday afternoon inside the KOA Arena.

Sitler put together her best offensive game of the season, posting career-highs in points, minutes, field goals, and field goals attempted. The freshman forward totaled 26 points on 12-of-21 from the floor and also grabbed seven rebounds.

Colleen Murphy and Cat Gollihugh also posted double-figure scoring outputs to aid the Bobcats in the victory. Murphy chipped in with 14 points and knocked down three shots from behind the three-point arc, while Cat Gollihugh added 13 points, knocked down three shots from deep, and dished out five assists.

Although she scored just two points in the game, sophomore Nadege Durand contributed in various other ways to help Pitt-Greensburg to its second-straight victory and the third in the last four games. Durand grabbed 15 rebounds, her third game this season with double-digit rebounds, and handed out a career-best 10 assists for her fourth double-double this year.

Pitt-Bradford had three players reach double-figures, led by Shirleah Ragin's 19 points, while Jennifer Isenberg posted a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Defensively, the Bobcats did a great job of limiting Shaelyn Snipes, who entered the game as the AMCC's fourth leading scorer, averaging 16.1 points. The Bobcats limited Snipes to just 13 points on 6-of-18 from the floor and just 1-of-5 from behind the three-point arc.

Pitt-Greensburg won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Panthers 45-43, but despite grabbing 19 offensive rebounds compared to 14 for the visitors, the Bobcats held Bradford to just seven second chance points.

The Bobcats did a fantastic job of moving the ball around on offense as they totaled a season-best 23 assists on 23 made field goals. Pitt-Greensburg also was aided by great outside shooting, hitting 8-of-20 from behind the three-point arc, while on the defensive end, they held the Panthers to just 3-of-12 from downtown.

The Panthers held the lead for the entire first quarter and with just over four minutes remaining, Snipes' three-pointer gave the home team their largest lead at 13-5, but Pitt-Greensburg outscored Bradford 13-6 over the remainder of the quarter to cut the deficit to 19-18 at the end of the opening 10 minutes.

Bradford continued to remain ahead on the scoreboard until the 4:03 mark of the second quarter when Murphy drilled her first three-pointer of the game to put the Bobcats ahead 29-27. Bradford snuck back in the lead with late baskets by Ragin with under 30 seconds left in the half, and the Panthers would go into the halftime break leading 36-34.

The Panthers pushed their lead in the second half to as much as nine on two different occasions in the third quarter, but with under two minutes left, Murphy caught fire, scoring eight straight-points as the Bobcats whittled the deficit to four (54-50) heading into the final quarter.

Pitt-Greensburg continued its effort into the fourth quarter and eventually erased a six-point deficit and tied the game at 58 on two makes at the charity stripe from Gollihugh. The Panthers came right back and snatched the lead the next time they had the basketball, but after defensive stops on the next two possessions, Pitt-Greensburg came down and would grab hold of the lead on a three-ball from Gollihugh.

Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the next time Pitt-Bradford had the basketball, it jumped back in front 62-61 with 1:08 left in regulation. Down one with under a minute left, Sitler came up huge for Pitt-Greensburg knocking down a jumper to put the visitors back in front once again, 63-62 with 50 seconds left.

Pitt-Greensburg would get a defensive stop on the next possession and would head to the line as the Panthers fouled to extend the game. Sam Ballow missed the first of two attempts, but connected on the second to put the Bobcats in front by two (64-62) with 22 seconds remaining

Following a timeout from the home side, the Panthers came down and Isenberg kept the ball alive as she grabbed an offensive board following a missed layup. Isenberg was fouled and headed to the line with a chance to tie the game. The Pitt-Bradford senior came up short on the first attempt, but made the second to get the Panthers within one with eight seconds left.

After an intentional foul, Ballow headed to the line for two shots and the sophomore guard proceeded to make both attempts to push the lead to three. On the next possession, Snipes' three-pointer was no good and Pitt-Greensburg would take the 66-63 victory.

In the fourth quarter, the Bobcats made seven of their eight attempts at the line which helped seal the victory.

Pitt-Greensburg will now have a 10-day break for finals and return to action Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 18 with a non-conference matchup at Carnegie Mellon, starting at 2 pm.
