Women's Soccer Takes Down Thiel In Home Opener Thursday Afternoon

GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer team used a dominating effort on both ends to defeat Thiel College, 2-0, in its home opener Thursday afternoon at Ridilla Field.

With the victory, Pitt-Greensburg improves to 2-1 overall, while Thiel drops to 0-3.

The Bobcats dominated on both ends of the field, outshooting the Tomcats by a 16-2 margin and defensively, held the visitors to just one shot on goal and no corner kicks.

Kaitlyn Watson earned her second win and first shutout of the season, stopping the only shot Thiel managed to put on frame.

Offensively, four players for the Bobcats recorded multi-shot efforts, led by Bri Burgunder's game-high five shots and four shots-on-goal. Tiffany Michalek totaled four attempts on the afternoon and two shots on frame, Allie Grimm had three shots and two shots on goal, and sophomore Alexa Fetterman came on as a subsitutue and totaled two attempts.

Despite holding a commanding 8-1 advantage in shot attempts and generating the lone corner kick in the opening 45 minutes of play, Pitt-Greensburg had not  yet scored with just five minutes left in the first half. The Bobcats would muster up an attack before the halftime break and after a great pass from Fetterman to Michalek, the Pitt-Greensburg freshman found the back of the net to give the home side a 1-0 lead at the halftime break.

After the brief break for intermission, the Bobcats carried the momentum into the second half and would double their lead to 2-0. Just over seven minutes into the second stanza, Grimm took a pass from Burgunder and the sophomore rocketed a blast into the goal to send Pitt-Greensburg to the win.

The 16 shots and nine shots on goal were season-highs for the Bobcats.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to the field Tuesday evening, when it travels to downtown Pittsburgh to face Chatham University at Highmark Stadium. Tuesday's matchup with the Cougars is set for 7:30 pm.
