Women's Basketball Falls In Overtime Battle At D'Youville Saturday Afternoon

BUFFALO, N.Y.- Colleen Murphy and Sam Ballow each posted career-highs, but the Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team (5-11, 4-5 AMCC) fell in overtime, 91-87 to D'Youville (7-9, 4-5 AMCC) in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup Saturday afternoon inside the College Center Gymnasium. 

Murphy led the way offensively for Pitt-Greensburg, tallying a career-high 24 points on 9-of-12 from the floor, and hit 4-of-7 from three-point distance. The four three-point shots are tied for the second most the junior guard has hit in a game this season. 

Alongside Murphy, Ballow also had a career-day posting 18 points on 7-of-15 attempts, which included hitting four shots from three. 
Nadege Durand and Maddie Sitler also were in double-figures for Pitt-Greensburg with 17 and 13 points respectively. To go along with 17 points, Durand recorded her 11th double-double as she grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds. 

D'Youville had five players in double-digits led by Danielle Hore's 18 and Monica June's 17 points and 10 rebounds. 

To go along with career days from both Murphy and Ballow, Pitt-Greensburg scored a season-high 87 points.  

The Bobcats displayed their shooting touch from behind the three-point arc, knocking down a season-high 12 three-pointers, and defensively held the Spartans to just 4-of-17 from three, including 0-9 in the first half. 

After D'Youville led 4-2 to begin the game, Sam Ballow drilled a three to give the Bobcats the lead, which they would continue to hold for the remainder of the first half. Defensively, Pitt-Greensburg held the Spartans to just 20 points in the first 20 minutes and headed into the halftime break leading 32-20. 

Both teams came out hot to begin the third quarter, as the two sides combined for 59 points, with Pitt-Greensburg tallying 28 points and the Spartans had 31. The Bobcats took a nine-point advantage (60-51) into the final 10 minute period. 

The Bobcats remained in front midway through the final quarter of play, but Jordan Smith's three-point shot with 3:16 left put the Spartans back in front, 69-68. 

The two sides traded baskets and with just over a minute left.  June's layup put D'Youville in front 73-71, but the next time down the court, Murphy delivered a three to put Pitt-Greensburg back into the lead. 

With under 30 seconds left, Smith drew a foul and headed to the line where she hit 1-of-2 to tie the game at 74, but on the next possession, Maddy Coddington hit a layup with just nine seconds left to break the tie. 

Following a timeout by the Spartans, the home side came down the court and hit a layup to once again tie the game and send the contest into the extra period. 

Durand opened the overtime period with a three-pointer to once again put the Bobcats back in front. A layup followed by two free-throws put the Spartans back in the lead at 80-79, but the next time down the floor, Coddington nailed another layup to catapult the Bobcats back in front. 

Danielle Hore hit 1-of-2 from the line to tie the score at 81 and just under midway through the OT period, June hit a bucket to put the Spartans back into the lead. After the layup, Murphy tied game matchup at 83 and Hore followed with a layup of her own to put D'Youville back in front. 

Following a three-point miss by the Bobcats, the Spartans grabbed an offensive rebound from a missed jumper and Smith scored to extend the D'Youville advantage to four (87-83). 

The Spartans forced a Pitt-Greensburg turnover on the next possession and answered with a layup to put the game away. D'Youville would hold on for a 91-87 victory. 

The two teams will turn around and face each other Monday afternoon inside Chambers Hall. Monday's matchup is set for 1 pm.
