Women’s Basketball Thumps Tomcats to Begin 2019-20 Season

GREENVILLE, Pa- The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's basketball team tipped off their season with a convincing, 71-42, win over Thiel College on Wednesday (Nov. 13). A 19-2 run that spanned eight minutes in the first and second quarters gave the Bobcats a double-digit lead that they never gave up. Thiel's record drops to 0-2 in the game that Pitt-Greensburg never let get closer than 20 points after the 6:58 mark in the third quarter.

Nadege Durand collected a double-double, with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds, to begin her junior season. Maddie Sitler scored 17 points, Colleen Murphy had 13, and Cat Gollihugh tallied 12, which resulted in four of the Bobcat starting five positing double figures.

The 19-2 run, mentioned above, really launched the Bobcats ahead, saw Durand get six of her points during that run, including a three pointer and free throw to cap off the stretch. The Bobcats carried a 14-point (37-23) edge into halftime.

Pitt-Greensburg did not put the game in cruise control after the break. Instead they came out and thumped the Tomcats 22-5 in the third quarter. The Bobcat defense forced Thiel to shoot just 14.3% (2 for 14) from the field in the quarter. A Murphy layup with under two minutes left in the quarter gave UPG their largest lead of the night at 32 points.

The Pitt-Greensburg women owned the paint, outscoring Thiel 28-12. The defense created 11 steals, with Sitler tallying a team-high four. The squad scored 36 points off of the 16 Tomcat turnovers. Owning the glass was a large part of the win as well. UPG out-rebounded Thiel 45 to 29, including 15-2 on the offensive end which produced a 10-2 margin in second chance points.

Pitt-Greensburg will continue their young season with a trip to Galloway, NJ to compete in the Stockton University Tip-Off this weekend. Their first game at the event will be against the 1-0 Cabrini Cavaliers, Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Sunday's matchup will depend on the results of Saturday's games.
