La Roche Upends Women’s Basketball In Overtime Thriller Saturday Afternoon

PITTSBURGH- The Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team (4-7, 2-4 AMCC) had four players reach double-figures, but La Roche (5-4, 5-0 AMCC) prevailed 73-63 in overtime, Saturday afternoon at the Kerr Fitness Center in the AMCC Game of the Week.

Maddie Sitler and Nadege Durand each tallied 12 points to lead the Bobcats, while Colleen Murphy added 10 and Shaqouia McCray posted 10 points and seven boards off the bench.

Ayanna Mazyck and Shaundrea Butler each scored 20 points in the win for La Roche.

Pitt-Greensburg held a 61-59 lead with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter thanks to two free-throws from Sitler, but out of their final timeout of regulation, Dasja Anderson connected on a layup with just seconds remaining to tie the game at 61 and force OT.

Anderson scored the first points of OT with a layup 18 seconds in and the Redhawks outscored Pitt-Greensburg 12-2 in the extra period to hold on for the 73-63 win.

The Bobcats did a great job of controlling the play in which they forced 20 La Roche turnovers and converted the extra possessions into 16 points.

La Roche won the battle of the boards as they outrebounded Pitt-Greensburg by a slight 42-37 advantage, but the Bobcats hauled down 13 offensive boards compared to just five for La Roche. UPG then turned those second chances into 11 points, while La Roche managed just two.

Both sides traded baskets to begin the opening frame and following a bucket from Jenna Cole, La Roche led 10-4 with 7:18 left in the first period.

Nia Thomas' layup extended the Redhawk advantage to 10 (17-7) with just over two minutes left in the period, but an 8-2 spurt by the Bobcats cut the deficit to 19-15 at the end of 10 minutes of action.

La Roche continued to hold the lead early in the second stanza, but a three-pointer from Maddy Coddington tied the contest at 23 and Durand followed with a jumper to give the Bobcats their first lead of the contest with 5:36 left in the first half.

Following Coddington's three to tie things up at 23, Pitt-Greensburg reeled off an 8-0 run, capped by an old fashioned three-point play by McCray which gave the Bobcats their largest advantage (31-23) with just under four minutes left in the half.

Butler's layup with 61 seconds left got the Redhawks to within two (31-29), but Sidney McCully answered with a bucket of her own as the Bobcats held a 33-31 lead at the halftime intermission.

La Roche opened the second half with five quick points to take the lead back, but a three-ball from Cat Gollihugh gave the lead back to UPG, which they would continue to hold for the remainder of the quarter.

Pitt-Greensburg led by as much as seven (50-43) in the third frame on a layup from Coddington and a free-throw from Gollihugh sent the visitors into the final stanza with a 51-45 advantage.

Early in the final period, a three-pointer from Murphy followed by an offensive board and a layup by Durand pushed the Bobcat advantage to double-digits (56-45). La Roche would not be fazed trailing by double-figures as the home side ran off a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to jump back into the lead. Mazyck connected on a bucket to push the Redhawks back into the lead, 57-56 with 3:28 left in regulation.

Neither team would score for the next two minutes, but a free-throw from Murphy tied things up at 57 with 1:12 left in the game. With under a minute left in regulation, Durand scored her 12th point of the contest to push the Bobcats back in front by two.

On the next possession, La Roche called a 30-second timeout. Coming out of the stoppage, Mazyck once again tied the score at 59 with a layup of her own.

Pitt-Greensburg called its final timeout of the game and out of the timeout UPG and La Roche both grabbed the basketball resulting in a jumpball. The possession arrow favored the Bobcats, so UPG would remain on offense. UPG got the ball to Sitler in the paint and she managed to draw a foul and would head to the line with a chance to give the Bobcats the lead one again.

Sitler cashed in both attempts to put UPG ahead 61-59 with just over five seconds left. Following the final timeout from La Roche, the Redhawks drew up a play in which they got the ball to Anderson in the post, who scored a layup at the buzzer to send the contest into OT.

Anderson scored the first points of OT with a layup 18 seconds into the period and the Redhawks outscored Pitt-Greensburg 12-2 in the extra stanza to hold on for the 73-63 win.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to action Saturday, January 4 when it hosts Pitt-Bradford for a 4 pm tip.
