Women's Basketball Leads Wire To Wire In Victory Over Franciscan

GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball team never trailed and led wire to wire in a 66-57 victory over Franciscan, in its regular-season home finale Wednesday evening inside Chambers Hall.

With the win, Pitt-Greensburg improves to 8-16 overall and 7-10 in the AMCC, while Franciscan falls to 2-21 and 2-15 in the conference.

The Bobcats conclude the 2018-19 regular-season this upcoming Saturday afternoon (Feb. 16) when they travel to Hamburg, N.Y. to face Hilbert, who currently sits atop the AMCC standings with a 14-3 record.

Pitt-Greensburg led in the game by as much as 16 (36-20), on a three-pointer late in the second quarter by Colleen Murphy

Franciscan cut the deficit to five (59-54) with 1:50 left in regulation on Angela Starre's jumper, but on the ensuing possession, Durand hauled down a three-point miss and converted the second chance opportunity to put the Bobcats back up seven.

Abby Baierl got the Barons to within five (61-56) the next time down the court, but with just under a minute left, Maddy Coddington cashed in two free-throws to push the Pitt-Greensburg lead to seven (63-56).

Starre drew a foul for the Barons and proceeded to hit just 1-of-2 from the line, but after the second free-throw, the Bobcats scored a fastbreak layup to put the game out of reach. Despite the furious comeback from the Barons, Pitt-Greensburg held off the charge and would keep its playoff hopes alive with a 66-57 victory.

Durand paced Pitt-Greensburg offensively scoring a game-high 26 points and 13 rebounds, seven of which she grabbed on the offensive glass. Sitler and Murphy also reached double-digits to help guide the Bobcats to the win, posting 12 and 11 points respectively. Sitler chipped in with eight rebounds, a block and two steals, while Murphy dished out an assist, had two blocks and two steals.

Defensively, the Bobcats frustrated the Barons, forcing 18 turnovers, which they converted into 12 points. Pitt-Greensburg also totaled 12 steals, which is the fifth time this season it has forced double-digit steals and the second time in its last three games.

Pitt-Greensburg concludes the 2018-19 regular-season Saturday afternoon, when it takes the trek to Buffalo, N.Y. to face Hilbert at 1 pm.
