Pitt-Greensburg Baseball Battles La Roche Tuesday Afternoon

PITTSBURGH- The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team dropped two tough fought contests to La Roche Tuesday afternoon at the Baierl Athletic Complex.

La Roche took the opening game 8-6 and used a two-run ninth inning to complete the 5-4 comeback victory.

Offensively, Brody Bonadio led the way with three hits on the afternoon, followed by Dylan DeRoss, Ben Green, Matt Mish, and Daniel Kiester, who each totaled two base-knocks. Griffin Clark and Tyler Holland each drove in two runs on the afternoon.

Pitt-Greensburg 6, La Roche 8

The Bobcats jumped out to the lead in their first at-bats of the afternoon. Bonadio led off with a double and moved over to third on a ground ball hit by Green, that was misplayed. With two runners on base, Holland hit into a doubleplay, but Bonadio scored on the play to put Pitt-Greensburg into the lead.

Dakota McWilliams sent down the Redhawks 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame and Pitt-Greensburg used that momentum in the second.

Derek Shaw led off the second with a walk and Mish followed with a single through the left side of the infield. The two runners moved over 60 feet on a wild pitch and Clark scored both runners on a triple to right center. Following the first out of the inning, DeRoss singled home the third run of the frame as the Bobcats led 4-0 heading into the home-half of the second.

Shane Roebuck led off the second with a solo-home run, which was the first of four runs in the inning, as La Roche tied the game with four runs on five hits.

The Redhawks would go on to plate two additional runs in both the fourth and fifth inning and would lead 8-4 after four innings.

DeRoss led off the fifth with a single through the middle of the infield, and following two-straight fly outs, Holland belted his second of the season over the right field fence to trim the deficit to two.

Neither side plated a run in the sixth inning and in the seventh, but DeRoss and Bonadio each reached base on an error to start the frame in the ninth inning. DeRoss moved over to third on Green's second hit of the game, but Mike Nuzzo recorded the final two outs of the inning as La Roche would hold on for the 8-6 win.

Pitt-Greensburg 4, La Roche 5

All tied at three entering the ninth inning, Cavanaugh gave the Bobcats life drawing a walk to begin the inning. DeRoss was brought on as a pinch runner for Cavanaugh. After the first out of the inning, DeRoss displayed his speed as he stole second base. Kiester flew out for the second out of the frame, but Bonadio roped a hard hit single to centerfield, which scored DeRoss to put the Bobcats ahead. Green also singled in the inning, which gave Pitt-Greensburg runners on first and second, but Holland would strikeout to end the inning.

Trailing by 1 in the ninth inning, Jay Novak drew a four-pitch walk and moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt. On a 2-0 pitch, Kifer tied the game at four with a single to right field and moved over to second following a hit by pitch. Pitt-Greensburg went to the bullpen and brought in DeRoss.

After two balls to start to at-bat, DeRoss evened the count to 2-2. Following a foul on the fifth pitch, Jonathan Melendez drilled a double to right center, which scored Nania for the walk-off win.

Tony Ianuzzo frustrated La Roche batters for much of the afternoon, as the sophomore allowed just seven hits over 8.1 innings and struck out four in the no-decision.

Neither side scored in the opening two innings, but Green gave the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage with a sac fly to right field, which scored Kiester.  Kiester smacked a double to right center earlier in the inning.

La Roche plated three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead, but the Bobcats came right back in the fourth and cut the deficit to one as Mish drove in Chris Common with an RBI single.

Ianuzzo continued to keep the Redhawks off the scoreboard and the Bobcats would take advantage in the seventh as Kister drove in Cavanaugh to the game at three.
