Women's Basketball Bested by Chatham

GREENSBURG – The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's basketball team dropped their first game of the season in a non-conference battle against Chatham University, 65-48, this afternoon inside Chambers Hall.

Pitt-Greensburg moves to 2-1 and Chatham stayed unbeaten (3-0) early in the 2021-22 season.

Maddie Sitler had her mid-range jump shot on point today, cashing in 16 points to lead the Bobcats. Nadege Durand earned herself a second consecutive double-double, posting 10 points and 15 rebounds.

The game started off as a back-and-forth bout before Chatham took control in the second quarter and never gave it up.

The score was all square six times in the game and five of those instances came in the first quarter. Durand made a layup with 20 seconds left in the opening frame to make it 13-13 after 10 minutes of play.

Pitt-Greensburg began the second quarter with four straight points, as Lizzie Penrose sank two free throws and Durand put in another lay-in. After a basket by each team, putting the score at 19-15 at the 8:29 mark in the second quarter, Chatham erupted for a 14-2 scoring run and took control of the contest. The Cougars regained the lead around the half way mark of the second frame, and only allowed one bucket to Pitt-Greensburg over the final eight minutes of the first half. They owned a 29-21 advantage going into the locker room, the largest lead of the game at that point.

Chatham would not give the lead up after the second quarter run and outscored the Bobcats 36 to 27 in the second half, as they shot 53.3% in the third quarter an 43.8% in the fourth. They got up double digits two minutes into the second half, and did not allow Pitt-Greensburg to get within eight points the rest of the way.

The Cougars ended the game with a 7-0 run over the final 4:47 to finish with their largest lead of the game at 17 points, 65-48.

Shaquoia McCray scored 12 point and pulled down 8 boards for the Bobcats.

Freshman, Emily Durkee was a difference maker off the bench for the Cougars, scoring a game-high 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting.

Chatham ended the game shooting 40.3% and went 5-for-23 from three, but each of those five came at big moments. The Bobcats were held to 31.7% shooting and struggled from beyond the arc for the second straight game, only cashing in on two of 15 attempts. Pitt-Greensburg had the rebounding advantage 43 to 40, paced by Durand and McCray.

Pitt-Greensburg will return to action on Wednesday, when they welcome Mount Union to Chambers Hall for a 7 pm tip.
