Men’s Tennis Takes Down Behrend To Advance To Sunday’s AMCC Championship

ERIE- The Pitt-Greensburg men's tennis team pulled out a 5-4 win over Penn State Behrend Saturday evening in an AMCC Tournament Semifinal Match at the Westwood Racquet Club.

With the win, Pitt-Greensburg advances to the program's second all-time appearance (2014) in the AMCC Final.

Pitt-Greensburg entered this year's tournament as the #2 seed and will take on the #1 Mount Aloysius in Sunday's final, with the winner receiving the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tourney.

This will be the second match this season between the Bobcats and Mt. Aloysius as the two squads met back on March 14, and it was the Mounties that picked up a narrow 5-4 win at the Greensburg Racquet Club.

The winner of Sunday's match will claim the either program's first AMCC Title and make their first appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament, The 2021 NCAA Division III Championship is scheduled for May 24-30 in Claremont, CA.

Tied 4-4, saturday's semifinal match came down to #2 singles where both Vaughn Hunkele and Noah Colvin each won a set, setting up an all important third-set tiebreak, with the winner advancing to Sunday's final.

It was only fitting that the final match of the evening would head to a tiebreak as the match between the two competitors earlier this season went to a tiebreak, and ultimately it was Hunkele that reeled off a 10-6 win.

Colvin took the opening set by a score of 6-2, but Hunkele regained focused and would force a tiebreak with a 7-5 win in the second set. Hunkele trailed 4-1 in the second set and stormed back to win the set and force the tiebreak. After a back-and-forth battle from both student-athletes, it was Hunkele that dug down deep and showed displayed his senior leadership, gutting out a 19-17 win in the tiebreak.

To begin the match, Pitt-Greensburg jumped out to a 2-1 advantage with wins at #1 and #3 doubles. Hunkele and Turner Price improved their doubles record to 5-0 on the season reeling off an 8-6 win, while Andrew Oden and Francisco Garcia picked up an 8-4 victory in the #2 spot.

Price made quick work in the top singles match, allowing just one point in the 6-0, 6-1 win, while Kyle Glessner also picked up a win for the Bobcats at #6 singles, 6-0, 6-3.
