GREENSBURG – The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's tennis team began their 2021 season with a thrilling, 5-4, win over visiting Franciscan University on Wednesday afternoon at the Greensburg Racquet Club.
Doubles:
Franciscan jumped ahead, 2-1, after the doubles portion of the match kicked off play.
The Bobcats #1 duo, Miranda Berkebile and Cathryn Rossi, got the home squad on the board in doubles play with an 8-6 victory.
The Barons took the second match over Emily Ruhlman and Abigail Rosman, 8-3, then edged out the Blue and Gold's Alycia Zummo and Isabella Lane in match three 8-6.
Singles:
Pitt-Greensburg turned the doubles deficit around rather quickly, as they rattled off three straight victories in singles play to jump ahead, 4-2.
The Bobcats #1, Emily Ruhlman, earned a win in three sets to get singles started. In set one, she won 6-2, then dropped the middle set, 6-1, and stormed backed to win the tiebreaker 10-4.
In the second singles match, Miranda Berkebile took care of business with 6-4 and 7-5 wins.
Abigail Rosman rolled to a two set sweep in singles #3, by scores of 6-4 and 7-5.
The Barons kept battling and secured straight set wins in matches four and five to tie the contest at 4-4.
It all came down to Mariah Ulery in her first collegiate match of her career. She fell behind early with a 6-1 loss, but then turned it on and won set two 6-4, and won a riveting tiebreak set 12-10 to secure the team's first win of the season.
This was the Bobcats' second win against the Barons, a former AMCC opponent, in their 12-match history.
Pitt-Greensburg will hit the road for their next match on Saturday. They will be in New Wilmington, Pa to take on the Westminster College Titans at 12 pm.
