WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's tennis team began Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play this afternoon with a 7-2 win over Medaille College, at the South Towns Tennis and Village Glen Tennis Clubs.
The Bobcats improve to 2-1 in the early season, and hand Medaille their first loss to put them at 1-1.
Doubles:
The Mavericks got ahead early, after Pitt-Greensburg's #1 duo, Cathryn Rossi and Miranda Berkebile, got edged out 8-7 in a back-and-forth match.
Emily Ruhlman and Abigail Rosman got the Bobcats on the board with a dominating 8-0 victory in the second doubles match.
Doubles play was rounded out by an 8-3 Pitt-Greensburg victory behind the rackets of Amber Sterrett and Isabella Lane.
Singles:
Riding a 2-1 lead into singles play, the Bobcats won the first five singles matches to clinch the victory. Medaille fended off the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the sixth singles match.
Emily Ruhlman, Miranda Berkebile, Abigail Rosman, Cathryn Rossi, and Amber Sterrett claimed the singles wins for Pitt-Greensburg. Each of the five wins were in straight sets. No Maverick won more than three games in any of the first five singles matches.
Sterrett was magnificent, winning every game of her singles match (6-0, 6-0).
Ruhlman improves to 3-0 on the season with her 6-2, 6-2 win.
Pitt Greensburg will stay on the road in the conference for their next match. They are set for a trip to Bradford, PA to take on Pitt-Bradford Friday afternoon at 2 pm.
