Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Start Propels Women’s Basketball Past Medaille

GREENSBURG – The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's basketball team stormed out to an 18-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back en route to a 75-56 victory over visiting Medaille College in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game this afternoon inside Chambers Hall.

The Bobcats are now off to a 3-0 start in conference play and improve to 8-2 overall. The Mavericks fall to 6-8 and 1-4 in the AMCC.

Pitt-Greensburg came out firing, shooting 73.3 percent in the opening ten minutes to get ahead 26-8 after the first quarter. That would be all the Bobcats would need, as they stayed ahead by double digits for the remainder of the game.

Sidney McCully led all scorers with 19 points, 16 of which came in the first half, and drained five three pointers. The junior guard has led the Bobcats in scoring in three consecutive games now. Melina Maietta netted 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting and went 3-for-3 from deep. Ten Bobcats found the scoring column on the afternoon, with a strong 21-point effort from the reserves.

Medaille trimmed the Bobcat lead down to 18, with an 8-0 run to close out the first half. At the six-and-a-half-minute mark in the third quarter, the Mavericks made it a 14-point game, but that would be as close as Pitt-Greensburg would let them get. Maietta scored four straight points, which sparked a 6-0 Pitt-Greensburg run to get the advantage back to 20 (50-30).

In the final ten minutes, the Bobcats kept it at a 20-point or more game for all but the final two seconds to take the conference matchup 75-56. Maietta gave the Bobcats their largest lead of the afternoon with seven minutes to play, when she made it a 26-point Bobcat lead (66-40).

The defense was on point all game for the Blue and Gold, especially in the first half, where they held the Mavericks to 24 percent shooting (8-of-33).

Pitt-Greensburg will be right back in action in just about 48 hours with an AMCC makeup contest against La Roche. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm on Monday inside the Kerr Fitness Center in Pittsburgh.
