Maietta Drops 27; Women's Basketball Falls in Season Opener

PITTSBURGH – The new era of Pitt-Greensburg women's basketball under first year head coach Darien Lantz officially hit the court tonight as the team took on the Celtics of Carlow in the Bobcats season opener. There was a mixture of new and familiar faces for Pitt-Greensburg as the team is replacing three starters from last season's AMCC runners up. Sophomore guard Melina Maietta, the hero from the AMCC semifinal game against Behrend, shined for 27 points, including four three pointers, but the Bobcats came up short 65-56.

Senior guard Sidney McCully also played a huge role in the game, scoring 13 points and securing six boards as well. Freshmen Tiana Moracco and Madison Scalese saw their first collegiate action and scored their first points as each had four points in the game. Moracco made the start for the Bobcats.

It was a rough shooting night for the Bobcats as they shot just 13.8 percent from behind the arc, with all four of their makes coming from the hands of Maietta in the third quarter. It was a welcome sight when Pitt-Greensburg turned defense into offense as the team scored 25 points off turnovers.

The Bobcats did hold an eight-point lead at the end of the third quarter but were not able to keep it. Pitt-Greensburg will now get back in the gym and prepare for their trip to Mount Union to take on the Purple Raiders on November 16.
