Women's Basketball Celebrates Senior Day With Win Over Alfred State

GREENSBURG – The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's basketball team celebrated senior day with a 72-60 win over Alfred State this afternoon inside Chambers Hall to cap off the 2021-22 regular season.

Freshman Melina Maietta had an answer for every comeback attempt by Alfred State as she led all scorers with a career-high 29 points, the most by any Bobcat this season. Nadege Durand posted her seventh double-double of the 2021-22 campaign with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bobcats were off to a fast start, scoring 13 of their 23 fast break points in the first quarter to get up 21-16 after the opening ten minutes. Pitt-Greensburg kept it rolling to start the second quarter to go ahead 36-20 with four and a half minutes left in the first half. The 16-point lead would prove to be the largest of the game, as Alfred State ended the half on a 10-2 run to make it an eight-point game (38-30) at the break.

The Pioneers kept battling and narrowed the Bobcats lead again in the third quarter, as they made it a five-point game heading into the final quarter of play.

After Alfred State scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter, Pitt-Greensburg netted six straight points, with four by Maietta, to boost their lead back up to nine. The Bobcats never let it get back within one possession again and held on for the wire-to-wire victory. Alycia Lynch helped seal the deal with two free throws to put the game out of reach with under a minute to play.

Pitt-Greensburg continued their dominance on the boards, posting a +12-rebounding margin, led by the team leader Shaquoia McCray, who pulled down 13.

Sidney McCullly started four fastbreaks with steals and dished out six assists, while scoring nine points over 39 minutes.

The Bobcats countered a cold shooting night from beyond the arc with 40 points in the paint. The Blue and Gold went 3-for-12 from deep, all three makes coming from Maietta.

Prior to the game, Pitt-Greensburg honored the four seniors, Nadege Durand, Alycia Lynch, Shaquoia McCray, and Maddie Sitler for their contributions to the program.

Pitt-Greensburg finishes the regular season with an 18-5 overall and 13-3 conference record, their most wins since 2014-15. The Bobcats have earned the three seed in next week's AMCC playoffs and will host #6 Penn State Altoona on Tuesday at 7 pm inside Chambers Hall.
