Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball extended its hot start to the season by winning the DoubleTree Holiday Tournament, defeating John Carroll 107-95 on Tuesday afternoon at the Bollman Center in Reading, Pa. The Bobcats improved to 11-0 on the season behind a relentless offensive attack and clutch execution in the closing minutes.
From the opening tip, Pitt-Greensburg set the tone with a fast start. Michael Bigley opened the scoring with a jumper, and Jackson Byer followed with a layup to make it 4-0. Matthew Marinchak's three-pointer at 16:16 pushed the lead to eight, and the Bobcats continued to run, turning steals into transition buckets. A 7-0 spurt capped by Marinchak's layup at 11:35 gave UPG a 29-17 advantage. By halftime, the Bobcats had poured in 59 points on 63.6% shooting, including five three-pointers, and led 59-47.
John Carroll mounted a second-half rally, cutting the margin to just three at 98-95 with 2:36 remaining. But the Bobcats responded like champions. Trent Rozich converted a three-point play to push the lead back to six, Byer added a layup at 1:22, and Ty Keffer calmly knocked down four free throws in the final minute. Marinchak's layup with 34 seconds left sealed the 12-point victory and the tournament crown.
Marinchak earned Tournament MVP honors after scoring a game-high 26 points with five rebounds and three steals. Keffer joined him on the All-Tournament Team, finishing with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Bigley added 17 points and four assists, while Byer scored 15 and Rozich chipped in 11 points and nine boards. Pitt-Greensburg dominated the paint with 54 points and racked up 34 fast-break points, while the bench contributed 21 points led by Tony Martin's nine.
