Bobcats Suffer Two Losses in Day One of Spring Trip

WINTER HAVEN, FL—It was a sunny 75-degree day in the Sunshine State, and the Bobcats decided to take advantage of it, playing two nine-inning games. The first game of the day was against Allegheny, with the Bobcats dropping a heartbreaker to the Gators 5-4. The second game of the day was a loss against Wisconsin-based Carthage, an NCAA tournament team in 2024, by the score of 7-0.

Game One
The story of the early afternoon was the gem of a game thrown by Bobcat sophomore Conner Burkey. Not only did Burkey strike out eight batters, but he went deep into the game, which set up the Bobcats beautifully for the duration of the Spring Trip. Burkey gave up seven hits over the 7.1 innings and four runs. He left the game with runners on first and second in the eighth inning with the Bobcats up one run.

The Bobcat pitching could not shut the door on the Gators after Burkey left the game, giving up the final two runs. Junior Kaleb Edwards (0-1) suffered the loss, while Allegheny's Ben Shields (1-0) earned the win, and Luke Pierce (1) earned the save.

The Bobcats out-hit the Gators 10 to 9 but lacked the timely hitting aspect as the team left nine runners on base. Senior Thomas Smith hit his first home run of the season as he cleared the left field fence to score him and Ben Aftanas as part of the three-run third inning. Four Bobcats finished the game with multiple hits.

Game Two
The second game of the day saw Pitt-Greensburg come up against a hard-throwing lefty pitcher, Ryan Scanlon, of the Carthage Firebirds. The left-handed heavy Bobcats lineup struggled to find footing as Scanlon tallied five of the 12 strikeouts.

After not making an error through two games, six UPG errors made things difficult to navigate for Pitt-Greensburg. Calvin Bernard (0-1) started the game and settled in well after a long first inning, giving the Bobcats some much-needed length on the mound. Bernard and sophomore Nicholas Laubach combined for 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Freshman Jacob Staraniec made his college debut, going an inning without giving up a hit and striking out a batter.
