Softball Earns Split With Kenyon Before Return to Conference Play

GAMBIER, OHIO – The Bobcat softball team didn't play an extra-inning game in their first 24 matchups. However, as they say, things come in waves, with Pitt-Greensburg playing their second extra-inning game in their last two series, this time against Kenyon. The Bobcats fell in eight innings to the Owls 4-3. UPG avenged its game one loss with a 6-3 win in game two.

Game One:

Freshman Paige Phillips made her fifth start inside the circle this season and went through three strong innings, giving up just one earned run. While Phillips only had one strikeout, she kept the Owls' batters from reaching base as Kenyon recorded just two hits and a walk in the 12 batters she faced.
Sophomore catcher Sadie Kelly continued the offensive momentum she started in the Penn St. Altoona doubleheader, as she was the lone Bobcat to have two hits in the game. Sophomore Julia Jastrzebski and freshman Rebecca Huss also pitched in the game. Jastrzebski went 3.0 innings, gave up one run, and struck out three batters. Huss threw 1.1 innings and gave up two runs, one earned. She suffered the loss.

Game Two:
Makenzie Lang hit her first home run of the year and recorded three of the Bobcats' six hits in game two, while driving in two runs. Senior pitcher Melanie Mienke could dance around 11 Kenyon hits to give up just three runs. Mienke struck out eight batters and earned her fifth win of the season.

The Owl defense struggled as three of the six Pitt-Greensburg runs were unearned. The Bobcats took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning before a bunt and two doubles drove in the three runs for the purple and black. Sophomores Jadyn Davis and Jessica Dunn drove in all the insurance the Bobcats would need with two RBI singles in the sixth inning.

Up Next:
The Bobcats will return to the AMCC on Tuesday, April 22, as they host Pitt-Bradford. The team will also be celebrating its three seniors. The first game will begin at 3 PM, and Senior Recognition will occur between the games. Pitt-Greensburg currently sits in sixth place in the AMCC, with the Panthers one game behind the Bobcats in the standings.
