Bobcats Open the Season with a Win

Barnes shuts out Thiel, Armenio scores twice in season opener

The Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats kicked off their 2025 men's soccer season in style, securing a 2-0 win over Thiel College in front of a home crowd. "It was great to get to open the season on our home field", said head coach Marc Bucci. "Playing in front of such a large number of friends and family always provides a big boost."

After a scoreless first half, junior forward Matt Armenio took control in the second, netting both goals for the Bobcats. His first came in the 49th minute, as he buried a blocked shot rebound in the back of the net. Armenio struck again in the 72nd minute, this time assisted by Ethan Rose. Despite netting both goals of the game for the Bobcats, Armenio complimented his team. "This was a great team result, kicking off the season strong," says Armenio. "My team made some great passes and I was lucky enough to use them to find the goal."

On the defensive end, Brett Barnes stood tall in goal for Pitt-Greensburg, making one save and earning the shutout. The Bobcats' backline kept Thiel's attack at bay throughout the match, allowing only 3 total shots.

"It was nice to get on the field and see competition, it was a physical game and overall I am pleased with the result," says Bucci. "I would've liked to see us convert on a few more chances offensively, but it's a good game to build on."

The Bobcats face a quick turnaround as they hit the road tomorrow for a match against Westminster. Asked about this, Coach Bucci notes that "this helps us to test our depth and give some new guys more opportunities to prove themselves." Kickoff for tomorrow night is scheduled for 7pm.
