The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's tennis team opened its 2025-26 season on the road against Franciscan University, facing a tough opponent in what proved to be a challenging match. Despite the 9-0 final score in favor of Franciscan, the Bobcats displayed resilience and competitive spirit throughout the contest.
Coach Deven Summers reflected on the team's performance, saying, "I am very proud of the way everyone fought throughout the match! Franciscan has a really solid team and we definitely had our work cut out for us in this first match of the season. That said, everyone continued to play hard and battle throughout each point!"
In doubles play, the No. 1 pairing of Gabi Moder and Nancy Jiang put up a strong fight, falling 6-3 to Franciscan's Kina Ehlers and Claire Cardie. The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams—Karen Rabe and Sophia Lapore, and Jessica Garcia and Emily Spino, respectively—were unable to overcome their opponents, each dropping their matches 6-0.
Singles competition saw several close sets, particularly at the top of the lineup. At No. 1 singles, Gabi Moder pushed Claire Cardie to a tight first set, ultimately falling 7-6, 6-0. Nancy Jiang also showed determination at No. 3 singles, battling to a 6-4, 6-3 defeat against Jordan Beltavski.
Other singles matches featured solid efforts from Karen Rabe, Jessica Garcia, Sophia Lapore, and Emily Spino, who each faced experienced Franciscan players. Though the results didn't go UPG's way, the team's effort and attitude were evident throughout the match.
With this season opener behind them, the Bobcats will look to build on their experience and continue developing their game. They will get that chance on Thursday as they face off with Geneva. The match is scheduled for 1:30PM at the Greensburg Racquet Club.
