Pitt-Greensburg Volleyball Splits Saturday Doubleheader in Pittsburgh

Coach Saville picks up first win as UPG head coach

Game 1: Chatham 3, Pitt-Greensburg 0

In the opening match of Saturday's doubleheader, Pitt-Greensburg fell in straight sets to Chatham University (25-16, 25-18, 25-17) at the Athletic & Fitness Center in Pittsburgh. Despite the loss, Head Coach Holly Saville saw significant growth from her team.

"We fought hard all day and although we lost against Chatham, we lost well and we worked," said Saville. "Totally different team than last week."

Pitt-Greensburg was led offensively by Mia Stohon, Shyann Dongilli, and Abigail Smulik, who each recorded five or more kills. Smulik added 10 digs and two service aces, while Lilly Buckles contributed 11 digs and a team-high 10 assists. The Bobcats struggled to find consistency at the net, finishing with a team hitting percentage of -.027.

Defensively, Emily Hernandez anchored the back row with 13 digs, and Racey Scheuerman and Ca'Mari Walden chipped in with two block assists apiece. The Bobcats showed fight throughout the match, registering 12 tie scores and four lead changes across the three sets.

Game 2: Pitt-Greensburg 3, Wilson 2

Pitt-Greensburg bounced back in the afternoon match with a thrilling five-set victory over Wilson College (25-12, 19-25, 25-12, 20-25, 16-14), earning their first win of the season and improving to 1-5 overall.

"We did not let up against Wilson," Saville said. "When our errors got ahead of us, we tightened it up and finished the job. I'm really proud of their work ethic, grit, and determination."

The Bobcats were paced by Mia Stohon, who delivered a standout performance with 16 kills and a .200 hitting percentage. Abigail Smulik added 14 kills and 11 assists, while Lilly Buckles continued her strong play with 23 assists and 13 digs. Emily Hernandez led the team with 41 digs and chipped in seven assists and two aces.

Pitt-Greensburg's offense came alive in key moments, hitting .242 in the third set and .152 in the decisive fifth. The team totaled 55 kills and hit .133 overall. Defensively, the Bobcats held strong with 111 digs and four total blocks, including solo efforts from Maelyn Dutko and Paige Phillips.

"I knew they could do it. I know they can continue to do it and I see them starting to believe in themselves! I couldn't be more excited and proud of them," Saville added.

The match featured 21 tie scores and 10 lead changes, with Pitt-Greensburg showing resilience in the final set to secure the win.

The Bobcats return home Tuesday for a special Suicide Awareness Game as they host Waynesburg. The game is scheduled for 7PM
