The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's soccer team continued its strong start to conference play on Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 4-0 shutout victory over Carlow University at FNB Stadium. Ella Smith led the offensive charge with two first-half goals as the Bobcats improved to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Pitt-Greensburg wasted little time taking control of the match, opening the scoring in the 13th minute. Tiger Santia delivered a corner kick into the box, where Smith connected on a header to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 advantage.
Smith struck again just over seven minutes later, finding the back of the net in the 21st minute. Riley Gesinski picked up the assist as Smith capitalized on a rebound and fired a shot into the top of the net to double the Greensburg lead.
The Bobcats continued to apply pressure and extended their advantage to 3-0 in the 24th minute when Bella Carroto converted a penalty kick. Pitt-Greensburg carried that three-goal cushion into halftime after outshooting the Celtics 12-1 in the opening 45 minutes.
Greensburg maintained its offensive momentum in the second half, peppering the Carlow defense with 17 additional shots. Carroto continued to create opportunities, while Santia and Gabriella Finch each rattled the crossbar as the Bobcats searched for another goal.
The breakthrough finally came in the 87th minute when Gesinski capped off the scoring with a strike from outside the 18-yard box. Her shot from the left side clipped the post and found the back of the net, sealing the 4-0 victory.
Smith finished with two goals on four shots, while Gesinski contributed a goal and an assist to go along with seven shots. Carroto added a goal and led the Bobcats with eight shots, including five on target. Santia also played a key role in the offensive attack, recording an assist on the opening goal.
Pitt-Greensburg dominated the statistical battle, outshooting Carlow 29-4 and holding a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Bobcats placed 17 shots on goal while limiting the Celtics to just two.
Defensively, goalkeeper Kira Howcroft played all 90 minutes and recorded two saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season, as the Greensburg back line kept Carlow off the scoreboard throughout the afternoon.
With the victory, Pitt-Greensburg improves to 7-4 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 2-0. The Bobcats will look to carry their momentum into Tuesday when they return home to host Mount Aloysius in another conference matchup.
