The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg women's soccer team continued its unbeaten run through Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) play Saturday afternoon, using a balanced offensive attack and a dominant defensive performance to shut out La Roche University, 5-0, at the Baierl Athletic Complex. With the victory, the Bobcats clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming AMCC Tournament and set up a showdown with Penn State Behrend on Tuesday with the conference's No. 1 seed on the line.
The Bobcats improved to 11-4 overall and 6-0 in conference play, while the Redhawks dropped to 2-8-2 overall and 1-3-2 in the AMCC.
Pitt-Greensburg controlled the match from the opening whistle, applying consistent offensive pressure and breaking through in the 14th minute when Bella Carroto finished a feed from Tiger Santia to give the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage. The lead doubled just over seven minutes later when a La Roche own goal made it 2-0 in the 21st minute.
The Bobcats continued to push forward and added their third goal in the 25th minute as Ella Smith found the back of the net off another assist from Santia. Pitt-Greensburg maintained control throughout the remainder of the opening half, carrying a 3-0 lead into the break after outshooting La Roche 8-0 and earning four corner kicks.
The offensive momentum carried into the second half as Pitt-Greensburg continued to generate scoring opportunities. Carroto struck again in the 60th minute, converting a penalty kick for her second goal of the afternoon to extend the Bobcats' advantage to 4-0. Just over four minutes later, Layla Widenhofer added the final tally of the match, finishing a pass from Santia in the 64th minute to push the lead to 5-0.
Carroto paced the Bobcats with a pair of goals, placing all three of her shots on target, while Smith and Widenhofer each contributed a goal. Santia played a pivotal role in the offensive performance, recording three assists and helping create scoring opportunities throughout the contest.
While the offense found success, Pitt-Greensburg's defense was equally impressive, holding the Redhawks without a shot in the first half and allowing just one attempt over the entire match. Goalkeeper Kira Howcroft went the distance in net, recording the shutout without being called upon to make a save.
The Bobcats finished with a commanding 17-1 advantage in shots, including a 9-0 edge in shots on goal, and earned all six corner kicks in the contest. Pitt-Greensburg continued to apply pressure until the final whistle, generating nine shots in the second half to complete the convincing road victory.
With a first-round tournament bye secured, Pitt-Greensburg will now turn its attention to Tuesday's regular-season finale at Penn State Behrend. The matchup will determine the AMCC's top seed heading into the conference tournament, giving the Bobcats an opportunity to complete an undefeated conference regular season and secure home-field advantage throughout the postseason.
