A pair of early goals from freshman Ella Smith and a strong defensive effort propelled the Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Penn State Altoona in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Tournament semifinals Wednesday afternoon at Ridilla Field.
The Bobcats improved to 12-5 overall with the victory and secured a spot in Saturday's AMCC Championship match.
Pitt-Greensburg wasted little time establishing control of the contest, as Smith opened the scoring just 4:19 into the first half to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 advantage. The Greensburg offense continued to pressure the Penn State Altoona defense, and Smith struck again in the 16th minute, finding the back of the net at the 15:45 mark to double the Bobcats' lead.
With a two-goal cushion, Pitt-Greensburg continued to create scoring opportunities throughout the opening half. Layla Widenhofer provided an offensive spark off the bench, putting two shots on goal that were turned away by Penn State Altoona goalkeeper Mya Torres. Bella Carroto nearly extended the lead in the 28th minute when her shot struck the crossbar. The Bobcats maintained their offensive pressure late in the half, as Gabriella Finch and Tiger Santia each forced saves in the closing minute, sending Greensburg into halftime with a 2-0 advantage after outshooting the Nittany Lions 12-2.
Smith credited the team's collective effort and defensive pressure for helping the Bobcats establish control early in the match.
"It was a whole team effort," Smith said. "We put a lot of pressure on them defensively and was able to put two in early and force Altoona out of their rhythm."
The Bobcats picked up where they left off to begin the second half, with Smith nearly completing her hat trick just over a minute after the restart when her shot hit the crossbar. Abigail Ault and Riley Gesinski followed with scoring opportunities before Ault forced another save from Torres in the 60th minute.
Penn State Altoona looked to generate a response midway through the second half, producing a pair of shots in the 65th minute before Julia Jin struck the post in the 73rd minute. The Greensburg defense held firm, however, preventing the Nittany Lions from registering a shot on goal throughout the contest.
Pitt-Greensburg continued to threaten down the stretch, with Hailey Baer forcing a save in the 76th minute before Smith again rattled the crossbar in the 80th minute. Widenhofer, Finch, Carroto and Gesinski all put shots on target over the final 10 minutes, but Torres kept the Bobcats from adding to their lead.
Smith led the way offensively with both Greensburg goals on four shots, while Widenhofer recorded a team-high five shots, including three on goal. Carroto added three shots, and Finch finished with two shots on target as the Bobcats held a commanding 23-6 advantage in total shots and a 12-0 edge in shots on goal. Pitt-Greensburg also earned six corner kicks compared to just one for Penn State Altoona.
On the defensive end, Kira Howcroft played all 90 minutes in goal to record the shutout, while the Bobcats' back line limited the Nittany Lions to just six shots and kept Howcroft from having to make a save.
With the victory, Pitt-Greensburg advances to Saturday's AMCC Championship match, where the Bobcats will face the winner of the semifinal matchup between Penn State Behrend and Hilbert. For Smith, the opportunity to compete for a conference championship in her freshman season adds to the excitement surrounding the team's postseason run.
"I'm excited to make it to the AMCC Championship game in my first season," Smith said. "Whoever we play, we're going to give them our best game."
