Bobcats Fall to Altoona in Series Opener

Pitt-Greensburg struck first on Tuesday afternoon, but an explosive response from Penn State Altoona proved too much to overcome as the Bobcats fell 20-2 in AMCC action at Stewart Athletic Field.

The Bobcats wasted no time setting the tone offensively in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff out, Colby Rearick sparked the rally with a single and stolen base, putting himself in scoring position. Tommy Smith followed with a clutch double to left-center, bringing home the game's first run. Later in the inning, William Somers delivered an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0 and give Pitt-Greensburg early momentum.

That momentum quickly shifted in the bottom half of the inning, as Altoona erupted for nine runs on nine hits. A two-run home run by Jonathan Rauch tied the game, and the Lions continued to apply pressure with timely hitting throughout the frame. A three-run blast from Cole Strick and a two-run homer from Brian Chelli highlighted the inning as Altoona surged ahead 9-2 before the Bobcats could record the final out.

After a quiet second inning, the Lions added to their lead in the third with another offensive surge. Rauch struck again with a three-run home run, part of a six-run inning that extended the advantage to 15-2. Altoona continued to capitalize on opportunities, using both power and situational hitting to keep the Bobcats on their heels.

Despite the lopsided score, Pitt-Greensburg continued to battle at the plate. Smith led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, reaching base four times and driving in a run. Hunter Gideons added a pair of hits, while Somers contributed an RBI as part of the Bobcats' eight-hit effort.

On the mound, Tyler Litts was tagged with the loss after Altoona's first-inning outburst. Landon Huth provided 2.1 innings of relief, and Mason Miller helped stabilize things with a solid middle-inning appearance, allowing just one run over two innings.

Altoona added single runs in the fifth and a four-run sixth inning to cap the scoring, with Rauch's third home run of the game serving as the final blow.

The series will continue Saturday as the Bobcats host Altoona for a doubleheader.
