After a tough 24-3 loss in the series opener last Tuesday, Pitt-Greensburg responded in a big way on Monday, sweeping a doubleheader at La Roche behind strong pitching and explosive offense.
Game 1 – Pitt-Greensburg 5, La Roche 1
Pitt-Greensburg opened the day with a complete performance, using a timely fourth-inning surge and a dominant effort on the mound to secure a 5-1 victory.
The Bobcats got on the board in the second inning when Colin Solinski launched a solo home run to right field, giving UPG an early 1-0 lead.
After stranding a runner at third in the third inning, Pitt-Greensburg broke through in a big way in the fourth. Tommy Smith started the rally with a single before Solinski worked a walk. Josh Preston followed with an RBI single to center to extend the lead.
Moments later, aggressive baserunning and pressure forced a La Roche error that allowed another run to score. Jonah Marks added an RBI single, and Hunter Gideons capped the four-run inning with a sacrifice fly as the Bobcats stretched the lead to 5-0.
On the mound, Conner Burkey delivered one of his best outings of the season, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on nine hits and striking out eight. He worked out of a key jam in the sixth inning, stranding runners at second and third to preserve the lead.
La Roche's only run came in the fifth inning, but Pitt-Greensburg remained in control throughout, closing out the opener with authority.
Game 2 – Pitt-Greensburg 13, La Roche 1
The Bobcats carried that momentum into game two and erupted offensively, scoring early and often in a commanding 13-1 victory to complete the sweep.
Pitt-Greensburg wasted no time, plating four runs in the first inning. William Somers sparked the rally before Colin Solinski delivered an RBI single. A wild pitch brought home another run, and Adrian Pagan Cruz capped the inning with a two-run double down the left field line to make it 4-0.
After adding a run in the second on an RBI walk by Landon Snider, the Bobcats broke the game wide open in the third inning. Hunter Gideons and Neo Miller set the table, and Somers drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Tommy Smith followed with a sacrifice fly, and Solinski added another RBI single.
Josh Preston delivered the biggest swing of the game, blasting a three-run home run to left field as part of a six-run inning that pushed the lead to 11-1.
Pitt-Greensburg continued to tack on runs in the fourth and sixth innings, with Solinski finishing with three hits and three RBIs, Preston driving in three, and Somers adding two RBIs and two runs scored.
On the mound, JJ Siemon was dominant, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on four hits and striking out four. He kept La Roche off balance throughout and never allowed the Redhawks to gain any traction.
The Bobcats will return to AMCC action Wednesday, traveling to Mt. Aloysuis for a single 9 inning contest.Â
