The Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer team enters the 2026 season with unfinished business, a battle-tested returning core and an identity head coach Chuck Wigle hopes will make the Bobcats one of the toughest teams on anyone's schedule. 

Coming off a 2025 campaign that included a trip to the AMCC Championship game and an ECAC postseason appearance, the Bobcats return several of their top performers from a team that finished 9-9-3 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play. 

Now entering his 14th season at the helm, Wigle has seen his team make the most of a shortened preseason as it prepares for another run near the top of the AMCC standings. 

"Things have gone well," Wigle said. "We've grown stronger and tougher in a shorter period of time due to the condensed preseason." 

Strength in Numbers, Strength in Each Other 

While Pitt-Greensburg brings back plenty of individual talent, Wigle believes one of the Bobcats' biggest advantages may be the chemistry that has developed among a group of players who have already logged significant minutes together. 

The roster features a close-knit collection of sophomores and juniors who have been tested in meaningful matches and understand what it takes to compete at the top of the conference. 

"We have a really close-knit group of sophomores and juniors that have all played significant roles," Wigle said. "This is a very coachable group and, so far, has been one of our most adaptable teams." 

That adaptability could prove important for a team replacing three All-Conference performers from last season in Megan Hickey, Maya Wertelet and Reese Walker. Rather than relying on one or two players to fill those voids, the Bobcats will look to their experienced returning group to take another step forward collectively. 

Proven Performers Lead the Charge 

There is no shortage of decorated players returning to Greensburg. 

Tiger Santia headlines the group after a standout 2025 season in which she earned First Team All-AMCC, Second Team All-ECAC and United Soccer Coaches Fourth Team All-Region honors. Santia led the Bobcats in assists while anchoring a defense that was particularly dominant during conference play, surrendering just one goal and recording seven shutouts in eight regular-season AMCC matches. 

Bella Carroto also returns after earning Second Team All-AMCC and Second Team All-ECAC recognition. Carroto paced Pitt-Greensburg in both goals and points last season and once again figures to play a major role in the Bobcats' attack. 

Wigle will also lean on returning All-Conference selections Kira Howcroft, Abby Ault and Sierra Frisoli. 

Howcroft returns in goal after posting five shutouts and a 1.53 goals-against average in 2025. Ault contributed on both ends of the field with two goals and three assists, while Frisoli adds another experienced presence to a veteran returning group. 

"Tiger and Bella Carroto have already received a lot of recognition, along with Kira Howcroft and Abby Ault," Wigle said. "We're counting on them. But we have a number of other sophomores and juniors that will have a huge impact on this season." 

A New Face Ready to Make Her Mark 

While experience forms the backbone of the Bobcats' roster, preseason camp has also given Pitt-Greensburg an opportunity to see which newcomers may be ready to contribute immediately. 

One name has already caught Wigle's attention: Ella Smith. 

"Ella Smith has done everything to prepare to make an impact in college," Wigle said. "She's had a really good camp." 

Smith joins a program with established players throughout the lineup, but her preseason performance has put her in position to add another piece to a group with postseason aspirations. 

Person. Teammate. Competitor. 

For all the tactical work and physical preparation that comes with preseason, Wigle's primary message has been about something deeper than formations or results. 

"It all starts with the proper mentality and attitude," Wigle said. "Be a good person, be a good teammate. That's our focus." 

It is a simple message that also shapes what Wigle wants Pitt-Greensburg to look like when the whistle blows. 

"Be a good person, be a good teammate," Wigle said of his message heading into the season. "Compete in everything you do." 

That mentality feeds directly into the identity the Bobcats want to establish in 2026: a team built on toughness, persistence and an unwillingness to back down. 

"Toughness, grit, no-quit mentality," Wigle said. "We want to be the program that everyone hates to play." 

The Road Back Runs Through Behrend 

Pitt-Greensburg came agonizingly close to reaching the top of the AMCC in 2025. 

The Bobcats went 6-1-1 in conference play before advancing to the AMCC Championship game, where their title bid ended against Penn State Behrend. Pitt-Greensburg's season continued into the ECAC postseason before a loss to Waynesburg brought the campaign to a close. 

The conference's preseason outlook sets up the possibility of another battle between the two programs. Pitt-Greensburg was picked to finish second in the 2026 AMCC standings, directly behind reigning champion Penn State Behrend. 

But before the Bobcats turn their attention to conference play, they will test themselves against another demanding non-conference slate. 

Saint Vincent, Susquehanna, Dickinson, Washington & Jefferson, Penn, Juniata, Gwynedd Mercy, Wooster, Geneva and Allegheny make up a challenging group of non-conference opponents designed to prepare Pitt-Greensburg for the games that follow. 

Circle the Dates 

The Bobcats won't have to wait long to get their first test. 

Pitt-Greensburg opens both its season and home schedule on Sept. 1 against Saint Vincent. After navigating its non-conference slate, the Bobcats begin AMCC play Oct. 3 against Pitt-Bradford. 

And one date already stands out at the end of the schedule. 

Pitt-Greensburg closes the regular season Oct. 27 against Penn State Behrend, a rematch of last season's AMCC Championship game and a matchup that could once again carry significant postseason implications. 

For Wigle, however, the season will not be defined solely by one opponent, one result or even one championship opportunity. When asked both what his goals are for this year's team and what he hopes it will accomplish by season's end, his answer was the same. 

"Grow together and compete in every game." 

If the Bobcats can do that while embracing the toughness, grit and no-quit mentality their coach is demanding, they may once again find themselves playing their biggest soccer when the calendar turns to November.
