The Pitt-Greensburg women's soccer team erupted for four second-half goals Saturday afternoon, pulling away from Gwynedd Mercy for a 4-0 victory at the GMercyU Athletic Complex.
After controlling much of the opening half without finding the back of the net, the Bobcats broke through after halftime and scored three times in just over two minutes. Bella Carroto led the offensive surge with a pair of goals, while Ella Smith and Riley Gesinski each added a tally as Pitt-Greensburg improved to 4-2 on the season.
Pitt-Greensburg dictated play from the opening whistle, outshooting the Griffins 10-1 and earning five corner kicks in the first half. Abigail Ault, Smith, Kathryn Chiado and Miranda Santina each put attempts on frame, but Gwynedd Mercy kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard through the opening 45 minutes. Goalkeeper Kira Howcroft made her lone save of the half in the 36th minute to send the game into halftime scoreless.
The Bobcats' persistence paid off in a big way early in the second half.
Carroto opened the scoring in the 54th minute, collecting a loose ball and striking it home to give Pitt-Greensburg a 1-0 advantage. Just 90 seconds later, she was in the right place again, burying the rebound of a blocked Mersadi McClain shot for her second goal of the afternoon.
The Bobcats weren't finished. Only 36 seconds after Carroto's second goal, Smith raced down the near sideline and finished her opportunity to suddenly make it 3-0. The three goals came in a span of just 2:06, turning what had been a scoreless contest into a commanding Pitt-Greensburg advantage.
Gesinski capped the scoring in the 69th minute. Off a corner kick, Dionna Santia and Layla Widenhofer combined to set up Gesinski, who finished at the far post for the Bobcats' fourth goal. Santia and Widenhofer were each credited with an assist.
Pitt-Greensburg finished with a dominant 20-3 advantage in shots, including a 12-2 edge in shots on goal, and earned all nine corner kicks in the contest. Carroto paced the Bobcats with five shots and two goals, Smith recorded four shots and a goal, while Gesinski scored on one of her two attempts.
At the other end, Howcroft played all 90 minutes and stopped both shots she faced to earn the clean sheet. The Bobcat defense held Gwynedd Mercy to just three total attempts and did not surrender a corner kick.
The victory moves Pitt-Greensburg to 4-2 overall, while Gwynedd Mercy falls to 2-4.
The Bobcats return home on Tuesday when they welcome Wooster for their next contest.
