A native of Alexander City, Alabama, Coach Robert Spain joined Pitt-Greensburg as the new head coach of the men’s soccer program in February 2014. Spain immediately put his stamp on the program in his first year, successfully completing the 2014 season with one of the largest one-year improvements in NCAA Division III history, turning in a 12-7-1 overall record in 2014 after a 3-16 record prior to Spain’s arrival. The Bobcats completed the 2014 season with the program’s best season in a decade, culminating in the program’s best conference regular season finish and best conference tournament finish since 2004. In 2014, Pitt-Greensburg achieved the program’s first post-season win in a decade, hosted the program’s first home post-season game in a decade and completed the season with the winningest season in a decade.
Prior to coming to Pitt-Greensburg, Coach Spain gained experience working in the front office for the LA Galaxy during the 2011 and 2012 MLS Cup Championship seasons and enjoyed stints as an assistant coach and goalkeepers coach at both Moravian College and Waldorf College.
Spain played collegiate soccer at the University of Charleston under 2009 NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year Chad Duernberger. As a captain, Spain helped the Charleston squad engineer one of the quickest program turnarounds in NCAA soccer history after inheriting a struggling 0-17-0 program. Charleston completed the 2009 season with a 19-4-0 overall record, WVIAC conference regular season championship, WVIAC conference tournament championship and an NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional championship.
Coach Spain graduated cum laude from the University of Charleston in 2010 with his Bachelors of Science in Sport Administration. He was named the 2009-2010 University of Charleston Outstanding Senior Sportsperson and was awarded the NCAA D-II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award. Coach Spain is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and holds his NSCAA National Diploma.
