PITTSBURGH, Pa: The Pitt-Greensburg Women's basketball team gave the Redhawks of La Roche College all they could handle in a tough 73-70 road loss Wednesday evening. Big performances by
Morgan Biddle (Flinton, PA, Glendale) and
Kayla Dames (Oakdale, PA, Chartiers Valley) would put the Bobcats in position to take the mid-week Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest but La Roche would do just enough to keep UPG out of the win column.
The loss drops the Bobcats to 4-3 in conference play and 8-6 on the season while the Redhawks improve to 7-0 in the AMCC and 10-4 overall.
Pitt-Greensburg displayed some solid shooting in the first half converting 45% (13-29) of their chances from the floor and 100% (6-6) from the foul line. Defensively, they'd hold La Roche to just 29% (13-29) shooting, but despite the shooting disparity could not pull ahead going into the half. At the break the teams would be knotted up 33-33, thanks in part to 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks by Biddle.
With 10:16 remaining in the second and the teams tied at 44-44, the Bobcats would mount a 18-7 run that spanned four minutes and 10 seconds to put UPG up 11, 62-51. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Redhawks would show their resolve, battling back to once again bring the teams even at 64-64 with 3:19 remaining. From that point forward the lead would change on two more occasions before La Roche would capture the 73-70 victory.
The Bobcats would outshoot, 43% to 31%, and outrebound the Redhawks 39-29, but 31 made free throws by LRC would be the difference.
Pitt-Greensburg was led by Biddle's 26 point 10 rebound and Dames' 21 point 12 rebound performances. The pair was efficient on the night with Biddle shooting 67% (10-15) from the floor and Dames converting 53% (8-15) of her shots and 75% (3-4) from behind the three point arc.
A trip to Hamburg, NY on Saturday, January 17
th for a 2:00pm AMCC matchup with Hilbert College is up next for the Bobcats.
