CRESSON, Pa: With 1.1 seconds remaining and the Bobcats trailing 52-51, an inbound play under the Bobcats' basket would decide everything in Monday's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest.
Lyndy Baer (Hollsopple, PA, Conemaugh Township) found
Kayla Dames (Oakdale, PA, Chartiers Valley) with the pass as she peeled off a well set screen and positioned herself on the left side of the paint. Dames would go up and convert the contested last second layup, giving Pitt-Greensburg a thrilling 53-52 conference victory.
The win moves the Bobcats into sole possession of third place as they improve to 6-3 in the AMCC and 10-6 on the season while Mount Aloysius drops to 3-6 in conference play and 6-8 overall.
Pitt-Greensburg would have to fight through a tough shooting first half and erase a double digit disadvantage to pull even with the Mounties before the team's broke for halftime. Trailing 19-9 with 4:54 remaining in the first, UPG mounted an 11-1 run capped by a
Morgan Biddle (Flinton, PA, Glendale) layup to even things up at 20-20.
The second half would see the Bobcats hold an advantage for nearly the entire half. With their largest lead coming on a Dames layup that put UPG up eight points, 37-28 with 10:12 remaining. Mount Aloysius would fight back, tying the game on three occasions before eventually taking their first lead of the half, 52-51 with fifteen seconds remaining. On the next possession,
Amanda Estok (Monroeville, PA, Gateway) would free herself up for a three point opportunity with three tics remaining that was tipped out of bounds by the Mounties. This would give the Bobcats one last shot with 1.1 left in the game and Dames would deliver.
Dame's game winning bucket would give her 10 points on the night but Pitt-Greensburg was led by
Emily Nelson (New Stanton, PA, Hempfield) who scored a game high 21 points with 15 coming in the second half alone.
Both teams would convert 29% of their shots on the night and sit nearly even in almost all statistical categories.
After a three game road stint, the Bobcats return home to face D'Youville College on Saturday, January 24
th. The Bobcats will look to avenge a three point road loss to the Spartans as the second half of conference play tips off at 2:00pm.
