GREENSBURG, Pa: The Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball team suffered a rare conference loss, just their second AMCC loss of the season as they fell to D'Youville College Saturday afternoon by a final score of 96-80.
The Bobcats drop into 3
nd place in the AMCC with an 8-2 record (8-9 overall), while the Spartans jump back into the playoff mix with a 4-7 league record (6-12 overall).
It was a sluggish first half for the normally hot shooting Bobcats, as they were just 11 of 31 (35%) from the floor in the first half. That total was well below their season average of nearly 45% on field goal attempts.
The Spartans were 18 of 35 (51%) in the first half, including 7 of 12 from three point range to build a 45-38 halftime lead.
DYC continued their hot shooting in the second half, posting a 60% field goal percentage, converting 21 of 35 attempts. The Spartans elected to keep the up-tempo pace throughout the game, which normally means an advantage for the Bobcats, who have given teams problems all season with their run and gun, high powered offense. However, it would be the Spartans day on Saturday, as they posted 51 second half points to run away with a 16 point victory.
Jerell Figueroa had a team high 19 points and 5 assist for the Bobcats in 33 minutes of work. Senior
Brian Heinle recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while
Marcus Thomas posted a 15 point, 6 rebound effort on the day. The Bobcats were playing without a fully healthy
Rocco Contristano, who despite an illness, still came off the bench to provide 9 points and 7 rebounds in only 22 minutes.
The loss snaps a four-game win streak for the Bobcats, who sit just a half game back of Medaille for the #2 spot in the AMCC and just a single game back of Penn State Behrend for the top seed with 8 games remaining.
Pitt-Greensburg will be on the road this Wednesday when they travel to Penn State Altoona for an 8pm tip. UPG won the previous matchup in Greensburg, 89-78 back on December 10
th.
**NOTES: At halftime of today's game, the Bobcats honored longtime assistant coach Dave Washburn, with a warm appreciation ceremony in his honor. Over 20 alums came back to celebrate with Washburn, who has been a part of the Bobcat basketball program for 16 of the 19 years the program has existed. The ceremony was organized by current UPG basketball assistant Harry Bowswer.
