GREENSBURG, Pa: 24 points and eight rebounds by
Morgan Biddle (Flinton, PA, Glendale) pushed Pitt-Greensburg past the Panthers of Pitt-Bradford, 59-56 in Saturday's second place showdown.
The Bobcats pull even with Pitt-Bradford and into a tie for second place, as both teams post 9-3 records in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. But, with their fifth straight win, Pitt-Greensburg now sits at 13-6 on the season as Bradford falls to 12-6 overall.
A 53% shooting performance in the opening half would give the Bobcats a six point, 31-25 advantage to take into halftime. They'd hold the visitors to 39% from the floor and without a three point bucket while adding six steals and a pair of blocks on the defensive end. Biddle finished the first with 14 points and six boards to pace Pitt-Greensburg as they would head into the break.
The Bobcats kicked it up a notch, opening the second half on a 7-3 run to promptly push their lead to double-digits at 38-28 with 16:44 remaining. Three and a half minutes later they'd enjoy their biggest lead of the game at 11, 46-35 before Bradford would start to chip away at the advantage. The Panther's would get as close as one point on two occasions, the latter coming with 7:47 left and a 48-47 score. An
Amanda Estok (Monroeville, PA, Gateway) three pointer 19 seconds later would separate the teams by four points and despite the Panther's push, they'd never get any closer than three points down the stretch. When all was said and done, Pitt-Greensburg would stand strong for a hard fought 59-56 victory.
The Bobcats would outshoot the visitors 46% to 34% on the night and convert 78% from the charity stripe to hold Bradford at bay.
Biddle's 24 points on 56% (10-18) shooting would lead all scorers, but she'd receive solid support from
Kayla Dames' (Oakdale, PA, Chartiers Valley) 12 point 8 rebound output and
Emily Nelson's (New Stanton, PA, Hempfield) 10 point performance. Biddle would go all 40 minutes and Nelson would be needed for 39 in the Bobcat win. UPG would also get a scrappy performance from guard
Lindsey McKamish (Pittsburgh, PA, Fox Chapel) who tallied six points, six boards, and a team leading four assists and three steals in 17 minutes of work.
Pitt-Greensburg will look to keep things rolling as they travel to Steubenville, OH for another conference contest, facing Franciscan University at 6:00pm on Wednesday, February 4
th. In their first meeting Pitt-Greensburg handed the Barons a 69-48 defeat.
