GREENSBURG, Pa: The Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball team used a 10-0 run late run in the second-half to secure a win against Pitt-Bradford Saturday afternoon, 79-72.
With the victory, the Bobcats remain undefeated in AMCC play at 3-0 (5-1 overall), while Pitt Bradford drops to a conference record of 1-2 and 2-5 overall.
Pitt-Greensburg came charging out of the gate, going on a 5-0 run in the first minute of the game on a layup by
Marcus Thomas (Uniontown, PA, Uniontown), followed by a 3-pointer from
Tyler DeWitt (Ligonier, PA, Ligonier Valley). The Bobcats trailed by 3 at the half, despite strong shooting as a team (50%) from both the floor and the 3-point line in the first half.
Pitt-Greensburg struggled to pull away from the Panthers until midway through the second-half, where the Bobcats scored 11 unanswered points. The Bobcats held off a run by Pitt-Bradford late in the second half, sealing the victory with a 3-pointer by
Mike Connelly (Butler, PA, St. Joseph) with 1:22 left, followed by 4 made free-throws by senior
Rocco Contristano (Pittsburgh, PA, Keystone Oaks) in the final minute of the game.
Contristano led the Bobcats with 24 points on the afternoon on 8-12 shooting from the field. Fellow seniors, Connelly followed with 22 points and classmate
Jerell Figueroa (Dover, PA, Dover Area) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 17, including a stellar 4 of 6 from 3-point range. Thomas pulled down 12 rebounds in the win. The Bobcats' senior class scored 77 of the 79 points in the victory.
Pitt-Greensburg will look to extend their winning streak to five games as the Bobcats host the Captains of Christopher Newport University in exhibition play on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
**GAME NOTES**-With his 24 points today, Contristano moves into 5th place all-time in career points at UPG (1134), passing former great Daniel Waajid (1119). He's now 66 points behind Rashad Davison for 4th all-time. Rocco also now sits at 9th all-time in rebounds with 424, passing Kevin Conlon (420) on the list.
-Figueroa now moves into 8th place all-time in points (1063), passing former teammate Brian Heinle (1052) on the list. Jerell also moves ahead of Heinle in assists, with 252, 3rd most all-time.
-Marcus Thomas passes Nate Watkins for 5th place in all-time rebounds with 540. He'll need just 24 more to pass Jeff Karaica for 4th place on the list.
