GREENSBORO, NC: A cold shooting night left the Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball team on the wrong end of an 89-57 defeat at the hands of Guilford College Tuesday evening.
After a near three week layoff, the Bobcats traveled to North Carolina as one of four teams in the Guilford College Holiday Classic.
On Tuesday, the host team Guilford started to pull away about midway through the first half and never looked back.
A three point basket by UPG's Tyler Dewitt gave the visitors an early 8-7 lead just 5 minutes into the game. After a layup by Mike Connelly, the Bobcats once again grabbed a 13-12 lead but Guilford would immediately respond with a 12-0 run to regain the lead for good at 24-12.
UPG remained within striking distance, trailing 42-33 at halftime, but the Guilford attack continued in the second half. Guilford shot over 50% in each half, combined with a poor shooting night from the Bobcats, ultimately was the story of the game.
Guilford dominated the paint on this night, outscoring UPG 56-12 while also keeping a 43-28 edge on the boards.
One bright spot on the night for UPG was the play of freshman Blake Shields. The first-year Bobcat had a career and game-high 19 points, including 6 three-point baskets.
Pitt-Greensburg (6-3) will return to the court tomorrow (Dec 30) to take on Greensboro College at 5pm in Ragan-Brown Field House.
