Greensburg, Pa: Despite Saturday's heavy snowfall outside Chamber's Hall, the Pitt-Greensburg seniors would put on a show and shine bright inside. The 2014-2015 senior class, consisting of
Brittany Butterworth (Howard, PA, Bald Eagle),
Kayla Dames (Oakdale, PA, Chartiers Valley),
Lindsey McKamish (Pittsburgh, PA, Fox Chapel),
Megan Hans (Pittsburgh, PA, North Hills), and
Morgan Biddle (Flinton, PA, Glendale) would combine for 42 points in a 75-44 triumph over Hilbert College.Â
The win improves the Bobcats to 10-6 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference and 14-9 on the season while Hilbert falls to 2-14 in conference play and 3-18 overall. With the playoffs already clinched, Pitt-Greensburg has a strong hold on third place and with another win will lock the #3 seed heading into the AMCC tournament.
After a solid first half that saw UPG shoot 38% (11-29) from the floor and 78% (7-9) from the foul line, they'd earn an 11 point, 32-22 lead to take into the half. Defensively, they'd hold the visitors to just 7 shots converted and force 13 first half Hawk turnovers. Offensively, the Bobcats where led by Butterworth and
Emily Merryman (Venus, PA, Cranberry), both finished the half with eight points.
Pitt-Greensburg would then really heat up, converting 55% (18-33) of their second half shots to consistently stretch their lead over the final twenty minutes. At the halfway point, a Butterworth layup would grow the advantage to 53-33. In the final ten minutes they'd increase the deficit to 31 points when a
Sylvia Stuart (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin East) layup with nine seconds left would close the afternoon's scoring at 75-44.
On the day, the sharp shooting Bobcats finished 47% of their shots from the floor. Their ability to convert 27 Hawk turnovers into 30 points was key as they consistently got to the rim for high percentage buckets.
UPG had five players score in double digits. Dames led the way with 14. Butterworth and
Emily Nelson (New Stanton, PA, Hempfield) finished with 11 apiece and Merryman and Stuart chipped in with 10. Â Nelson would also tally a game and team high 9 assists while Stuart pulled down a team high 9 boards.
Pitt-Greensburg will play their last regular season home game this Wednesday, February 18 at 6:00pm when Mount Aloysius travels to Chamber's Hall. The 7-9 Mounties fell on their home court, 53-52 thanks to a Dames buzzer beater in the teams' first meeting in January.
