AUBURNDALE, FL:Â The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team gathered a cornucopia of runs against the Pilgrims to harvest a 10-3 victory in their final spring game in Florida.
The win improves the Bobcats to 5-4 on the season while New England College drops to 1-4.
Pitt-Greensburg would post the game's first runs in the top of the second inning. A
Matt Moyer (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) sacrifice fly to left field would get the scoring started, followed by a
Mike Maleski (Pittsburgh, PA, Plum) RBI single to give UPG an early 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats would add to their lead in the top of the third after a
Chad Jacob (Bridgeville, PA, Chartiers Valley) single would put runners at the corners for
Matt Germanoski (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City). Germanoski would deliver a one run double down the left field line, to score
Dylan Pounds (Houston, PA, Chartiers-Houston) and advance Jacob to third. One batter later, Jacob would be brought home compliments of a
Tyler Lilja (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) sacrifice fly, moving UPG's lead to 4-0.
One inning later a Pounds single to score
Greg Lynn (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) would stretch the Bobcat advantage to 5-0.
The top of the sixth would produce three more Pitt-Greensburg runs with Maleski,
John Buerkle (Jacksonville, FL, Fletcher), and Pounds all crossing home plate to extend the lead to 8-0.
New England College would plate their first run in the bottom of the sixth and add two more in the seventh to cut the deficit to 8-3.
The Bobcats would answer in the eighth with a Pounds single and a Jacob double to put men at second and third base. Both would score, thanks to a pair of Pilgrim wild pitches that put UPG up 10-3.
Cory Deighan (Bethel Park, PA, Seton-La Salle) would shut the door on NEC with two shutout innings in relief to help the Bobcats collect their fifth win in Florida. Starting pitcher,
Billy Elliott (Ligonier, PA, Ligonier Valley) picked up his second victory of the season after a commanding performance which saw him strikeout seven batters over six innings. He'd allow just one walk and one run, none earned on two hits.
Lynn, Pounds, Jacob, Germanoski, Bozzuto, and Maleski would all finish with multiple hits, with Pounds and Germanoski posting a game-high two RBI and Pounds also plating a game-high three runs scored.
The Bobcats will now travel back to Greensburg for a 1:00pm home doubleheader with Grove City College on Monday, March 16
