CRESSON- Six players scored in double-figures to lead the Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball team to an 82-77 victory at Mt. Aloysius in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup Wednesday evening.
With tonight's win, Pitt-Greensburg has now won six of the last seven games against the Mounties and also have won four of the last five meetings played at Mt. Aloysius, including three straight. The Mount Aloysius College Athletic Convention and Wellness Center has been sort of a home away from home for Pitt-Greensburg, as they have won five straight games in the building, including last year's Senior Night game and the AMCC Quarterfinal that was moved to Cresson when Chambers Hall was flooded.
When asked about the win, Head Coach Sean Strickland had these comments, "I'm so proud of our guys. They battled through adversity all year and kept playing hard. It would have been easy to quit, but they haven't. They deserved to break through."
Pitt-Greensburg trailed 35-33 at halftime despite having a better field goal percentage, as the Bobcats knocked down 14-of-30 for a 46.7% clip, while Mt. Aloysius was 14-of-37. Mt. Aloysius used the long ball to take a two point halftime lead as the Mounties knocked down nine three-pointers in the first 20 minutes and for the game hit 15-of-41.
The Bobcats used one of their best halves of the season to propel them to victory as they shot 52.9% from the field and held Mt. Aloysius to just under 37%, as Pitt-Greensburg outscored the Mounties 47-40 in the final stanza.
Kyle Bondi led the Bobcats with 19 points, while
Jay Grubb was not far behind with 15.
Matt Darby came off the bench and totaled a double-double with 12 points and 11 assists, while
Cody Spaid,
Brady Kingston, and
Blake Shields all added 11. Spaid completed his first career double-double hauling down 20 boards, which is tied for the fifth most in program history, while Darby's 11 assists are also career-high and puts him tied for third most in the record books.
Offensively, Mt. Aloysius had four player total double-figures on the night led by Chad Eisenhuth who had a game-high 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting.
Mt. Aloysius jumped out to a 10-point lead (20-10) seven minutes into the first half, but with just over eight minutes left in the opening 20 minutes Kingston's three pointer cut the deficit to four, 25-21.
After an Eisenhuth three-pointer, the Mounties extended their lead to 33-24 with 6:32 remaining, the Bobcats stormed back and ended the half on an 11-4 run to get within two, and head into halftime trailing 37-35.
Pitt-Greensburg opened the second half with two-straight buckets by Grubb and Bondi to take its first lead of the game, 39-37.
The Bobcats continued to play inspired basketball and raced out to a 10-point lead with 13:22 left in the game on
Joe Mancini's three-pointer, but the Mounties responded with a quick 7-0 run to cut the lead to 55-52 at the 11:02 mark.
Mt. Aloysius would get the Pitt-Greensburg lead to four, 73-69 late in the second half, but clutch foul shooting from Darby would send the Bobcats to the 82-77 victory.
The Bobcats return to the court Saturday when they play host to D'Youville at 3:00 p.m.
