Kyle Bondi and
Blake Shields each scored 19 points but Franciscan used a big second half, shooting 51.4% to record an 87-72 victory over the Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball team on Wednesday night in Chambers Hall.
The Bobcats trailed 39-33 after the first half of play, but the Barons connected on 19-of-37 from the field for a 51.4% clip and led by as much as 27 early on in the second 20 minutes.
Shields scored all 19 of his points in the second half, including knocking down 4-of-6 from behind the three-point arc. With just under five minutes remaining in regulation, Shields caught fire nailing a three-pointer on three consecutive trips down the floor. Keoni Sablan led the Barons with a game-high 27 points, while Juwan Perkins added 16 points and nine rebounds.
Pitt-Greensburg tallied a season-high 53 rebounds, including 21 on the offensive glass, and despite being limited to just 15 minutes of action due to foul trouble,
Cody Spaid led the Bobcats with nine rebounds to go along with nine points.
The Bobcats managed to get to the free-throw line 31 times, but struggled to hit shots from the charity stripe knocking down just 15 attempts.
Pitt-Greensburg jumped out to a quick 6-2 advantage over the first three minutes of action, but the Barons came back and took the lead on back-to-back baskets by Garrison Holes, as Franciscan would remain in the lead for the rest of the first half. The Barons led by as much as 10, 29-19 with 5:52 left in the first 20 minutes, but Franciscan took a 39-33 into the locker room for the halftime intermission.
Franciscan led for the entire second half, leading by as much as 27 on Michael Mendicino's three-pointer at the 10:03 mark, but Pitt-Greensburg cut into the large deficit, outscoring the Barons 38-16 over the final 10 minutes of the game. Despite the comeback, the Bobcats fell 87-72.
Pitt-Greensburg returns to the court Saturday as it travels to Buffalo, N.Y. to face Hilbert at 3:00 p.m.
