BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team earned a split of a doubleheader with host Medaille, in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference battle Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Park.
Medaille took the opening game 11-6, behind a seven-run second inning, but Pitt-Greensburg came back and topped the Mavericks in the nightcap 14-10, as the Bobcats put up 11 runs in the third inning. A total of 15 batters for Pitt-Greensburg came to the plate in the big third inning, and it is the second time in 2017 that the Bobcats have scored 10 or more runs in a single inning.
Game 2- Pitt-Greensburg 14, Medaille 10
The Bobcats got great offense throughout its lineup, as seven players had at least two hits.
Chris Common led the way going 3-for-6 with two runs and four RBI, three of which came on his seventh home run of the season.
Ryan Dodson and
Daniel Kiester also had a great game at the plate with each player driving in two runs.
Zack Zimmerman,
Tyler Holland, Dodson, Common, and
Mike Parlak each crossed the plate twice for the Bobcats.
Medaille jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after the first inning, but the Bobcats would come right back in the top of the second and cut the deficit to one on an RBI by Derek Shaw.
Matt Mish tossed a scoreless second and Pitt-Greensburg exploded for the 11-run second inning to take control of the game. The Bobcats scored 11 runs on nine hits in the inning.
Dylan Pounds, Kister, and Dodson all drove in two RBI, and Common smashed his seventh home run of the year to complete the 11 run outburst.
In the sixth, Common drove in his fourth run of the game with a triple and two batters later,
Jake Bulick scored Common with a base knock. ]
Medaille would add three runs in the eighth, but Pounds came on to pitch the ninth, and the senior did not allow a hit and struck out three to send Pitt-Greensburg to the 14-10 win.
The Bobcats got solid efforts on the mound from Mish and
Bill Minnick, who each went four innings, before Pounds was called upon to toss the ninth.
Game 1- Pitt-Greensburg 6, Medaille 11
Medaille would go on to take the first game of the afternoon behind a seven-run outburst in the second inning.
Neither team scored in the opening frame, but the Mavericks put together an offensive outburst, as 11 batters came to bat, which resulted in seven runs on six hits.
The Bobcats ended the shutout bid with two runs in the fourth. Dodson led off with a double, and would come around to score on a base hit from Common. Parklak was the next to bat, and on an 0-2 pitch, smacked a base hit which scored Common.
Parlak was at it again in the sixth, driving in Common, and in the seventh, Pounds smashed a two-run bomb, his first of the season, but it was not enough as Medaille would hold on for the 11-6 win.
Pitt-Greensburg returns to the diamond tomorrow (Sunday, April 23), when it hosts D'Youville for Senior Day. Sunday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
