Second Half Spurt Lifts Medaille Past @UPGBasketball

GREENSBURG- The Pitt-Greensburg men's basketball team held a 38-32 lead at the halftime break, but Medaille shot 60% from the floor in the second half and exploded for 54 points as it picked up an 86-75 victory Saturday afternoon in Chambers Hall.

Medaille shot just 36% in the opening half making 14-of-39 from the field and just 1-of-12 from three-point distance, but knocked down 20-of-33 field goal attempts in the second stanza (61%) and drilled 7-of-11 from distance. Pitt-Greensburg made nearly 50% of its attempts in the opening half, making 13-of-27 and 5-of-10 from three, but hit just 13-of-33 in the second half and 5-of-17 from behind the three-point arc.

Jalen Smith led all scorers with a game-high 26 points and did most of his damage in the second half, totaling 20 points on 7-of-11 from the field and 6-of-8 from three-point distance. Meghale Ford, Mike Hollenbeck and Jonathan Smith each added 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Mavericks.

Cam Seigfreidd paced the Bobcats with 20 points and also added two steals, while Jay Grubb and Kyle Bondi added 17 and 16 points respectively. Grubb totaled 16 points on 6-of-11 from the field and made 4-of-5 from the free-throw line, while Bondi notched a double-double grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Mavericks came out firing to start the contest and jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead just under five minutes gone in the first half, but the Bobcats battled back and took their first lead (17-15) on a three-pointer by Runco with 11:57 left in the opening half.

The two sides continued to trade baskets, but with 3:27 left in the half, Jay Grubb's layup put the Bobcats ahead for the remainder of the half. Pitt-Greensburg held a 38-32 lead at the halftime break.

Bondi's layup just after halftime pushed the Bobcat lead to eight, but Medaille reeled off a 9-0 run to take the lead for good. The Mavericks caught fire in the second half shooting 60% from the field and would go on for an 86-75 win.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to action Wednesday evening, when it plays host to Mt. Aloysius for a 6 pm tip-off.
