Women's Volleyball Battles La Roche Wednesday Night

PITTSBURGH- Despite a valiant effort, the Pitt-Greensburg women's volleyball team (1-21, 1-6 AMCC) dropped a hard fought 3-0 (16-25, 19-25, 13-25) decision to La Roche (12-11, 5-2 AMCC), in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup Wednesday night in the Kerr Fitness Center.

Pitt-Greensburg totaled 21 kills on 102 attacks for a .020 hitting percentage, while La Roche mustered 31 kills on 99 swings for a .141 percentage.
Alexis Ray led the way offensively with six kills, followed by five from Marissa Leonard, and three from Sabre Turner. Mackenzie Schropp, Emma Dongilli, and Turner each provided help serving the volleyball, as the trio of players each tallied a serving ace. Dongilli contributed to the offensive output with 17 assists, while on the defensive end, Kassi Niver notched 16 digs.

The Bobcats got off to a quick start winning the first five points to take a 5-0 advantage, but the Redhawks came right back and scored six of the next seven points to tie the opening game at six. Pitt-Greensburg responded with three of the next four points to hold a 9-7 lead, but La Roche reeled off five-straight points before Pitt-Greensburg called timeout. The Redhawks extended their lead to 13-9 out of the timeout, but once again a kill by Schropp, a La Roche error, and a Turner service ace got the Bobcats within a point, 13-12. La Roche then answered with back-to-back points, but the Bobcats would score three unanswered to tie the game at 15, before La Roche would call its first timeout. Following the timeout, the Redhawks won seven of the night eight points to take command of the game and would go on for a 25-16 victory.

In the second set, the Bobcats once again got off to an early advantage as they led 11-9 after a kill by Leonard. Ray's kill put the Bobcats ahead 12-10, but La Roche would answer with six consecutive points to once again take command. A service ace by Schropp cut the deficit to 21-19, but the Redhawks then answered with four points to take game two, 25-19.

Early on in the third game, a kill by Ray kept the Bobcats close, but similar to the first two games, the Redhawks had the answer, reeling off six-straight points to take hold of the match. La Roche won the final three points of the game and would go on for a 3-0 win, as they took game three, by a score of 25-13.

Pitt-Greensburg returns to action Saturday afternoon, when it welcomes Pitt-Bradford to Chambers Hall, for an AMCC matchup at 1 pm.
